The latter are more likely to enter labour markets that are more informal, occupy a lower status and receive comparatively lower pay. MOBILE STUDENTS Students are becoming increasingly mobile, according to data from UNESCO: in 2006 there were 2.7 million international students, as compared to 2.5 million in 2004. In emerging economies, higher education has become a growth industry; very large numbers of graduates are, in turn, creating significant new markets for learning institutions. However, the increasing levels of graduate unemployment in countries such as China suggests that there’s a need for additional forms of niche learning, beyond traditional academic degree programmes. THE NEED FOR CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING Cultural understanding is more important than ever before due to increasing globalization and mobility. This also means that it’s vital for an individual to find out about their own society’s cultural practices and core values.
