Learning Unity
Unity is used to create half of the world’s games. Their real time platform, powered by tools
and services that offer incredible possibilities for game developers, and creators across
industries and applications. Unity enhances the entire platform and gives creators the
power to express their talents and collaborate more efficiently. It supports both 2D and 3D
development with features and functionality for your specific needs across genres.
I wanted my project to be different and unique, to get this I decided upon working in the
software unity. I have previously never worked in Unity before so this was something that I
had to learn from scratch step by step. Starting off I watched YouTube videos upon different
aspects on it and learned the general basics of the program for example where all the
controls and layouts are, e.g. The import bar, or the actual view of the game itself. I learned
about assets that can be used and borrowed from the unity store and then I utilised some of
these assets for making up buildings and architectural structure. There’s also Unity guides
where you can get a practical guide with information and resources that will get you on your
way, save you time, and help you gain the most value when developing games or using
Unity.
The tutorials in unity were the first steps that I took in my game. In these I learned how to
use and move objects in a game assigning themsome value. To start I had to import and
drag the files into the game area files because I learnt that they were two separate
components, this means that it would actually run properly. I added value by adding
components on to them and selecting regibodys and this allows objects to be interactive
with by the character but it won’t work on other aspects such as npc’s.
Terrain is a part of a game that you need to get right but because I’m new mine is more of a
test run which I really like but I feel that I could have made it better. To start off the terrain I
made a plate on the ground and then I used tools for terrain to shape it up into peaks,
mounds and drops which ended up with a great looking mountain terrain to show off, which
is great for future showcases. This honestly wasn’t hard to pick up and I learned it fast and
made it so efficiently.
My project is a showcase so I wanted camera movements to show off the different aspects.
The camera is the hardest part of unity in my opinion because you need to think about
positioning and then you also need to have direction light on top of that and it’s very hard
to frame everything correctly and get the camera to the position that you want it at, I had to
use the community to help me with this one and they did, I had to use the camera to move
it from location to location and then record it whilst its tracking. A lot of people use this
technique for making trailers because it’s more useful in them.
Going through step by step making my project in unity was such a great experience and I
enjoyed it so much from beginning to end. The overall skills that I have learned will come in
handy for any future projects which I will be going on to do at university. Of course there is
still a lot for me to learn as I have barely scratched the surface with this game engine.
