Course Introduction and
Overview of Material Selection
By: Prof. Hany M. El-Said
Course Aims & Objectives
Course Aims:
• To equip students with the knowledge and skills to select appropriate materials for product design,
• considering functional, economic, and environmental factors,
• while fostering creativity in material manipulation.
Course Objectives:
• Understand the principles of material selection in product design.
• Evaluate materials based on functional, economic, and environmental criteria.
• Explore the relationship between material properties, manufacturing processes, and product performance.
• Develop creative approaches to material manipulation for innovative designs.
Importance of Material Selection in Product
Design
Why Material Selection Matters:
- Functionality: Ensures the product performs as intended.
- Durability: Affects the product's lifespan and reliability.
- Aesthetics: Influences the visual and tactile appeal of the product.
- Cost: Impacts production expenses and environmental sustainability.
Key Considerations:
- Functional requirements
- Processability
- Cost (economic and environmental)
- Reliability
- Resistance to service conditions
Overview of Material Categories
Materials are classified into four main categories, each with unique properties and applications:
1. Metals
2. Ceramics
3. Polymers
4. Composites
Metals
Properties:
- High strength and ductility
- Good thermal and electrical conductivity
Applications:
- Structural components (e.g., bridges, buildings)
- Machinery and tools
- Electrical wiring
Examples:
- Steel, aluminum, copper, titanium
Ceramics
Properties:
- High hardness and thermal resistance
- Chemically stable
Applications:
- Insulators and cutting tools
- Biomedical implants
- High-temperature components
Examples:
- Alumina, silicon carbide, zirconia
Polymers
Properties:
- Lightweight and flexible
- Corrosion-resistant
Applications:
- Packaging and textiles
- Automotive parts
- Consumer goods
Examples:
- Polyethylene, PVC, nylon, rubber
Composites
Properties:
- Combination of properties from two or more materials
- High strength-to-weight ratio
Applications:
- Aerospace and automotive industries
- Sports equipment
- Construction
Examples:
- Fiberglass, carbon fiber-reinforced polymers, concrete
How Do We Choose A Material?
Product function depends upon…
Material, manufacturing process, geometry (MFG)
We have to consider all three
Do we select a few feasible materials first…
Then select the specific MFG processes?
Or
Do we select a few feasible MFG processes first…
Then select the specific materials?
Design Material Manipulation
=
Creativity
Design Material Manipulation = Creativity
- Material selection is both a technical and creative process.
- Understanding material properties and limitations enables innovation.
- The interplay between material, manufacturing process, and geometry (MFG) is key to successful design.
