What is a Society?
• In the context of science, "society" generally refers to the broader
human community and its interactions with scientific knowledge and
practices.
• It encompasses how science influences society and how societal
factors, like culture and values, shape the development and application
of science.
• This relationship is studied within interdisciplinary fields like Science,
Technology, and Society (STS).
What is a Society?
• Society as a recipient of science:
• Science creates new technologies and knowledge that impact
society's health, economy, culture, and environment.
• Society as a shaper of science:
• Societal values, beliefs, and priorities influence which scientific
research is prioritized, how it's conducted, and how its findings are
interpreted and applied.
What is Science, Technology, and Society
(STS) ?
• Science, Technology, and Society (STS) is an interdisciplinary field that
examines the intricate relationships between scientific advancements,
technological innovations, and societal structures.
• It explores how social, cultural, political, and economic factors
influence the development and application of science and technology,
and conversely, how these scientific and technological developments
shape society.
Science, Technology, and Society (STS)
• The development of vaccines is influenced by societal needs and concerns about public
health, but also shapes public health practices.
• Public debates about climate change involve scientific evidence, but also reflect differing
cultural values and political priorities.
• Scientific research into artificial intelligence is shaped by societal goals and ethical
considerations, while also raising concerns about the future of work and human
interaction.
• In essence, the relationship between science and society is a dynamic and reciprocal
one, where each influences the other in profound ways.
