Can you give an
example of technology
and how it is related
to science?
What is Science?
• “Science is a way of
organizing what we already
know and learning more by
experiments.” – National
Institute of Environmental
Health Science.
• Science came from the latin word
“Scientia” meaning knowledge
or to know. It is the effort of
discovering and increasing
human understanding of how the
physical world works. –

• Science came from the Latin word
“Scientia” meaning knowledge or
to know. It is the effort of
discovering and increasing human
understanding of how the physical
world works.
• Any system of knowledge that is
concerned with the physical
world and its phenomena that
entails unbiased observations and
systematic experimentations –
Britannica
• Knowledge about or study of the
natural world based on facts
learned through experiments and
observations and experiments. –
Merriam-Webster
How does Science differ from other
Subjects?
• It uses observations and
experiments to describe and
explain the things that happen
around us.
How does Science differ from other
Subjects?

experiments to describe and
explain the things that happen

PSEUDOSCIENCE
• Studies that are not based on
the scientific method (yet are
claimed to be scientific).
What is Technology?
• The practical application of
knowledge especially in a
particular area. – Merriam-
Webster
• Comes from the Greek word
“Techne” which means art or skill of
hand and “Logia” meaning collection
of techniques, skills, methods and
processes used in production of
goods and services. – Wikipedia

goods and services. – Wikipedia
• Technology – with the increase of
knowledge and understanding
through science, inventions can be
used to improve the quality of our
lives. This improvement is called
technology.
Why Science and
Technology?
• The words Science and Technology can
and are often used interchangeably. But
the goal of science is the search of
knowledge for its own sake while the
goal of technology is to create products
that solve problems and improve human
life. Simply put, technology is the
practical application of science.
Basis for Comparison Science Technology
Meaning A methodical way of
gaining knowledge on a
particular subject through
observation and
experiments.
The practical application of
the scientific knowledge
for various purposes.
What is it? The process of exploring
new knowledge
The use of laws of science
to create new products
Effect It is useful It can be useful or harmful
Change Does not change Changes continuously
Stresses on Discovery Invention
Deals with Study of structure and
behaviour of the natural
and physical world to
create evidences
Putting those evidences
into practice
Method of Evaluation Analysis, theory
development and deduction
Analysis and synthesis of
design
Use Used to make predictions Simplify the work and
fulfil the needs of people

Examples of
Technology
1. Information Technology – a broad class of
machines that processes data and perform
calculations at high speed.
2. Agriculture Robots – machines that help in the
farm
3. Architecture – Technologies are used for
building elevators and smart windows.
4. Appliances – a general term for technologies that
can be found at home.
5. Industrial Machines – are machines that are
highly specialized for a specific function such as in
mining and factories.
6. Clothing and Accessories – technologies like
smart watches are used nowadays.
7. Medical Technology – Hospitals showcase the
most numerous advanced technologies that are used
nowadays.
8. Assistive Technology – devices that are used to
assist impaired people.
9. Space – use of robots and space crafts to observe
the universe.
10. Robotics – a class of machines with semi-
autonomous capabilities of carrying out a task.
11. Artificial Intelligence – a technology that learns
and improves itself.
12. Superintelligence – a type of technology that
exhibits intelligence that exceeds the human mind.
What are the positive
effects of technology
to the society and to
our environment?
What do you think are the negative effects of
technology to the society and to our environment?
