Urinary System
By: Mr. Nikko Lorenz Lawsin
General Functions of Urinary System
Filtration
Urine Formation (Removal of Nitrogenous
Waste)
Reabsorption of Water, minerals, elements
and compounds
Urinary Tract Functions
1. Kidney - Bean-shaped organ which
filters the blood and collect all
nitrogenous wastes.
- This is made possible with
Nephrons, a fundamental and
functional unit of this system
2. Ureter - Tubular structure that serves as
the passageway of urine
3.Urinary
Bladder
- Sac-like structure which serves
as temporary storage of urine
4. Urethra - Opening which the urine is
released.
Components of Urinary System
Nephrons
Basic functional unit of
kidney
1.Bowman’s Capsule –
receives blood
2.Glomerulus – filters the
blood, and almost
absorbs 15% Water
Nephrons
 Proximal Convoluted
Tubules – absorbs all
glucose, fatty acids and
glycerols, most enzymes,
elements, hormones and
necessary salts.
 Distal Convoluted Tubules
– delivers the urea that is
collected along filtration
go to the collecting duct
Nephrons
 Collecting Duct –
receives the urea and
delivers it into the ureter.
 Capillaries – this is where
all reabsorbed nutrients
will deliver back to
circulatory system.
