- 9. Sample Essay Question: Describe the term “civil disobedience”. Why did Martin Luther King promote non-violence in the push for civil rights? “ Civil disobedience” is an active refusal to obey unfair laws. An example of this type of protest is the incident with Rosa Parks. She knowingly disobeyed the bus laws by taking a white man’s seat. King did not believe violence was the key to solving the racial problems in the United States. In his speech “I Have a Dream”, he referred to the need of other African-Americans to use “soul force” over physical force. He also stated that the destiny of the two races were closely tied together. In conclusion, if African-Americans were to be successful, they would still need to live and work together with whites. Resorting to violence could damage relationships between black and white people and possibly create future problems.
