Close Contact with
Confirmed Case
Employees who have
come into close contact
with an individual who
has tested positive for
COVID-19 (co-worker or
otherwise) will be
directed to self-isolate for
10 days from the last date
of close contact with that
individual.
Close contact is defined as approximately one (1) meter for over 15 minutes.
If the Company learns that an employee has tested positive, the COVID-19
response team will conduct an investigation to determine co-workers who may
have had close contact with the confirmed positive employee.
Those employees who have had close contact will need to self-isolate for 10 days
from the last date of close contact with that employee.
If applicable, the COVID-19 response team will also notify any sub-contractors,
vendors/suppliers or visitors who may have had close contact with the
confirmed-positive employee.
If an employee learns that he or she has come into close contact with a
confirmed-positive individual outside of the workplace, he/she must alert his/her
line manager / supervisor immediately, seek testing and self-isolate until his/her
results have been received.
Lesson 5: Management of confirmed or suspected casesManagement of Confirmed or Suspected Cases
Confirmed or Suspected Case in the Workplace
If an employee contracts COVID-19 at the workplace or is displaying symptoms, the following protocols should be
undertaken:
Isolate the sick
employee.
Inform – call the national
COVID-19 hotline (0800
029 999) and follow the
advice of health officials.
Transport – ensure the
individual has transport
to their home or medical
facility.
Clean the area where the
person was working and
all places they have been.
This may mean
evacuating those areas.
Identify who at the
workplace had close
contact with the infected
person. Send those
people home to isolate
for 10 days and continue
to monitor their
temperature and
symptoms remotely.
Clean the area where the
close contact people
were working and all
common areas they have
been. This may mean
evacuating those areas.
Review risk management
controls relating to
COVID-19 and review
whether work may need
to change. Keep
employees up to date
with relevant
information.
If the employee is not at
work when he / she is
suspected to have
COVID-19, then ensure
employee is tested and
self-isolates.
IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH A CONFIRMED CASE
• Employees who have come into close contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 must
self-isolate for 10 days from the last date of close contact with that person.
• Close contact is defined as approximately one meter and for 15 minutes or longer in the persons
presence.
• If an employee has tested positive, the COVID-19 response team will conduct an investigation to
determine co-workers who may have had close contact with the confirmed positive employee.
• Those employees who have had close contact will need to self-isolate for 10 days from the last date of
close contact with that employee.
• Where necessary the COVID-19 response team will also notify any clients, contractors, vendors,
suppliers or visitors who may have had close contact with the confirmed-positive employee.
• If an employee discovers that they have come into close contact with a confirmed-positive individual
outside of the workplace, they must alert the COVID-19 manager, line manager or supervisor
immediately. They must seek testing and self-isolate until their results have been received.
COMMUNICATION DURING THE PANDEMIC
The COVID-19 Response Team
and the COVID-19 manager
must update employees on a
regular basis on COVID-19
matters
Communication can be
conveyed by email, posters and
notice boards.
Employees must be made
aware if someone in the
workplace has tested positive.
Enhancement should be made
to internal reporting and
communication channels.
Proactively review absenteeism
of all employees. Employees
who do not report to work with
a reason must be contacted and
a COVID-19 symptom check
should be done telephonically.
Employees who are ill must
stay at home – if they have
COVID-19 symptoms they must
inform the COVID-19 manager
or their line manager or
supervisor immediately
