- 1. RISK – Lesson 6 Taking Information from Images
- 2. Taking Information from Images Walt says: “In this lesson we will learn: How to take information from images. How to speculate abut what images show. How images can help us to think of research questions. That text and images can be used together to help us gain a fuller picture of events.” Wilf says: “By the end of this lesson you should be able to say: ‘ I can… take information from images. speculate about what images show me. think of research questions. can use text and images to gain a fuller picture of events.’”
- 3. The story so far … So far we have been using text based sources: - Books. - Skimming and scanning text. We have also recorded information in different ways: - Timelines. - Tables/grids. - Mind maps.
- 4. BUT … There are other sources of information we can use! We can use IMAGES, e.g. photographs, diagrams, pictures, maps etc. You will use images in all of your school subjects.
- 5. When you look at an image 2 things happen: 1) You will immediately absorb lots of information. 2) You will think of questions for further investigation. INFORMATION

- 7. My response ... “This looks like a family scene but the family are not at home. Gas masks were used during the Second World War and these people are using them. This tells me that it is wartime. They are playing dominoes to pass the time. It looks as if they are in a room made of metal. They could be sheltering from an air raid.”
- 8. Activity 16 – Taking Information from Images Turn to p. 20 of your pupil booklet. Look at the photograph carefully, and answer the questions. You can work with a partner. You have 5 minutes. Be prepared to report back to the class. Good luck!
- 9. Key Point Images are great for research and investigating! They give us valuable information, and can show us things that text does not. HOWEVER! Images are best used along with other sources. Other sources can add further information, and can help to answer the questions which images raise.
- 10. An Example Many people built shelters during the Blitz to protect them from air raids. The picture shows the inside of one kind, called an Anderson shelter. It got its name from Sir John Anderson, who was Home Secretary at the time. Its corrugated iron shell sat half-buried in the back garden. Everyone was given a gas mask in the war because the government feared that some bombs might contain poisonous gas. This family is enjoying a game of dominoes in spite of the bombs and the threat of gas.
- 11. Complete Activity 17 – Words and Images During the Blitz, many Londoners slept on platforms of underground stations because they felt safer there away from the bombs. The picture shows people taking refuge in Holborn underground station. During the worst part of the bombing, almost 180,000 people slept in the tube stations each night. The story goes, that the loud snoring in the tunnels sounded like the wind.
- 12. Summary Remember… Photographs, images, maps and diagrams are very useful sources of information. Images can also help us to come up with good research questions. It is best to use a variety of sources when researching or investigating as this allows you to build up a fuller picture.
