Lesson 7 – Using the Internet I’m Wilf . I will tell you “ w hat I ’ m l ooking f or” in this unit. This means I want to know if you can do what I am looking for by the end! I’m Walt . I will tell you what we will be learning, after all: w e a re l earning t o…work well in Meldrum Academy!
Using the Internet Walt says: “In this lesson we will learn to: use the internet to find information effectively use web addresses that we know use search engines and the advanced search facility use alternative keywords”
Using the Internet Wilf says: “By the end of this lesson you should be able to say: ‘ I can… find relevant information quickly use search engines use alternative keywords use advanced search use web addresses.’”
The internet is a quick and easy way to access lots of information, BUT… Most of the websites you will find initially will have lots of irrelevant information in them, SO… You need to think carefully about what you need to find out, BY: Reading the investigation question / task carefully Ask yourself what you already know about this topic Ask yourself what are you being asked to find out Identify relevant KEYWORDS which you can use in a search engine to narrow down the results Using the Internet to Find Information
An Example of an Investigation Question How does cold weather affect old people living north of the border? Discuss anything you already know about the ways in which old people are affected. Discuss which keywords might be useful for answering this question before going on to the next slides.
Keywords and alternatives FOR EXAMPLE: Use inverted commas to search for a phrase e.g. “ cold weather” “old people” Use synonyms e.g. elderly; pensioners; OAPs Combine keywords e.g. elderly Scotland “cold weather”
Where to Look The internet contains millions of pages of information If you know what you want to find out but don’t know where to find it on the internet you might want to use your keywords in a search engine e.g. www.google.co.uk www.yahoo.co.uk www.ask.com
Better Places to Look You might be more successful if you already know the actual address of a quality website e.g. www.bbc.co.uk www.greenpeace.org.uk Website addresses are often found in the back of books on the subject Anyone can make up a website on any topic, so you can’t always tell which websites are useful or accurate. Example: Wikipedia is a really popular resource, but the pages can be written by anyone and are not always 100% correct!
Tasks You are now going to try this out for yourself. Follow the instructions in your pupil booklet, starting with Activity 18: Using Internet Search Engines and then Activity 19: Advanced Internet Search
