Lesson Plan 4°
Date ofthe class: 6 ofAugust.
Timetable: 15:50 to 16:35 and 16:35 to 17:20. 45 min each class.
>Wednesday Class: What can I do?<
Topic: Things I CAN or CAN’T do.
Aim: To develop and practice:
 Vocabulary: Can/can’t actions (running, cooking, reading, etc.) and sports (ski,
ride a motorbike, swim, etc.).
 Structures: present simple in first personsingular.
 Skills: speaking, listening and writing.
 Function: expressing ability. Asking and answering about what they can/cannot
do.
Age: primary 9-10
Time: 45 minutes.
Materials:
✦ Whiteboard and markers.
✦ Worksheet.
Introduction:
This lesson will consistof introducing can/can’t. Pupils will work mostly orally
throughout the lesson so that they can practice oral production. There will be a game
using flashcards so that students can reinforce meaning and vocabulary, and later they
will have to write examples of their own on a worksheet that we will provide.
Procedure:
1- Starting the class (5 min): At the beginning of the class we will ask a student
to deliver the badges with the pupils’ names to his/her classmates and we will take
down note of the absent students.
2- Presenting the topic (10 min): We will begin writing the words CAN and
CAN’T on the board and providing them with examples for each word (I can read – I
can’t fly) along with a cross and a tick next to each example. Then, we will ask the
students if they know or have an idea of what those words mean. If they can
understand the meaning, we will ask them to provide more examples. If they find it
difficult to understand the meaning, we will improvise a dialogue between both of us,
e.g.: Laura: Besim, Can you cook? Besim: Yes, I can cookvery well. Besim: Laura,
Can you play tennis? Laura: No, I can’t but I can play volleyball. Then, we will ask
them again what they think CAN/CAN’T mean.
3- Flashcards game (10 - 15 min): this activity will consist of making questions
according to the sportthey have in the flashcard (ski, fly, ride a motorbike, etc). Pupils
will have to answer questions like “Can you fly?” by saying something like “No, I
can’t fly”. This way, children will not only retrieve the vocabulary about sports and
verbs, but they will also associate the meaning of can and cannot in a “tangible” way.
Once they have answered a couple of similar questions, we will divide the lesson into
two groups and ask them to ask/answer questions one group to the other.
4- Writing activity (10 min): we will ask the pupils to complete the worksheet
that we will give them. In this activity, they will have to complete some sentences
according to what they can or cannot do. Then we will ask them to hand in the
worksheets so that we can correctthem at home.
5- Mimic game (5 min): to finish with this class, we will play a mimic game.
Students will have to guess what actions the teacher is representing and say “The
teacher can’t write”, “The teacher can jump”, etc. With this activity we plan to
reinforce all the vocabulary seen through the whole lesson.
