Pros & Cons • This tool is definitely going to “Engage” students. • You can type your response, record your message, or call a number and speak into the phone • You have the option of monitoring your class if you invest in Voki classroom. • Voki offers lessons that you can adapt and use in your classroom. • Students that just create a free account will need a valid email address and will have to share their voki’s with you via email unless you set up a website or blog. • Sometimes when you are talking the recorder may not translate what you say and you may have to spell words phonetically. • Limited access to the tools, characters, and other features if you are not a member.

- #2: Thank you for choosing this session! I would like to share four tools that can be useful in the library or classroom. These tech tools can be used in grades first through twelfth. I hope they are as “Fun” for you as they have been for me.
- #3: By show of hands, how many of you are familiar with all four of these tools? Three? Two? One I would like to show you how you can use Pixton, QR Codes, Animoto, and Voki in your library or classroom to enhance student learning.
- #4: Do you enjoy making comics? Pixton allows you to use different characters, props, settings, and speech bubbles to create a comic. Setting up an account is easy and you will have the opportunity to enjoy the features of a member during the “free trial” period. In order to start you should log in to Pixton.com. Once you have set up your account, you can begin creating comics by using the characters, speech bubbles, choose your background, and different scenes. When your membership expires, you will have the option to join or enjoy the Basic membership for “free.”
- #5: Pixton allows you to make digital comics. At the elementary level, this is a great tool to teach “dialogue” and using “speech bubbles.” Also, this is a great tool to use when introducing “Graphic Novels” to students or as an extension activity after reading a graphic novel in middle and high schools.
- #6: Pixton can be used in elementary, middle, or high school. Teachers/Librarians can use this tool to generate conversations, students can work in pairs or threes to create comics, increase public speaking and strengthen social interactive skills. I have included a good website
- #7: There are three types of membership. Basic, Trial, and Pixton Plus. The Basic membership allows you to create up to two rows of comics (6) slides free. During the trial period you can add various prop sets, animation, longer comics. If you become a plus member, you have the option to make your comics private, print, and download your comics. The cost is 7.99 monthly, 22.99 quarterly, or 89.99 annually.
- #8: Pixton can be used in every grade level but I have chosen a third grade standard because this is the grade that I will be teaching this year. If you are a school librarian, you can choose a standard from each grade to align with your Pixton activity.
- #9: QR codes are a fun way to involve students, parents, and community members of what’s going on in the school or classroom. In order to use this feature you must have a smart phone or tablet.
- #10: Creating Barcodes are very easy. You can choose to create a website link, encoded message, contact details, or send a SMS. I-nigma gives you the option to give your Barcode a Title which makes it easy to locate once you save it to your device.
- #11: Once you have created your Barcode, you have to have the i-nigma App on your IOS, Android, or other Tablet. In order to do this, you must go into your “Play Store” and search for the I-nigma App. This is a free app but be sure you have enough memory on your device or sd card. Once you have downloaded the APP, you should be able to scan the barcode in order to retrieve the information.
- #12: i-nigma Barcode creator allows teachers, administrators, and librarians to change the way we communicate and perform tasks. This tool makes learning fun and engaging and most of all it is FREE. If you do not own a “Smart” device, this tool will not be useful for you. Also, if you are at school and the iPads or Tablets do not have this app, you may have to request it through your “Tech” department and depending on your school system’s rules, you may not be able to download this app.
- #13: Here is link to a website that lists 25 fun ways to use QR odes. Some of the suggested ways include a scavenger hunt, library book add-on, cite sources, solve problems, QR stations for self-directed learning, and Back to School Night to name a few. I actually scanned this code using my iPad and it took me directly to the website. If you have this app installed on your device, try scanning it now.
- #14: Do you like to take and share photos? Animoto is the perfect tool to use to make and share videos. Just log into animoto.com to get started. With a free account you can create up to a 30 second video.
- #15: If you decide to become a member, you can choose a Personal, Professional, or Business account. If you choose the personal account, you will pay 9.99 a month if you are billed for an entire year at once. If not, then you will have to pay 19.99. If you want a professional account, you will have to be billed up front for 19.99 a month for 12 months which equates to 239.88 or you can pay $29.99 if you choose to be billed monthly. The business membership costs 29.99 a month for 12 months if you are billed at once. If you choose to be billed monthly, then the prices are 39.99.
- #16: This is an Animoto video I created for an assignment. The theme is “Back to School.” Once your videos are published you can upload them to your You Tube Account.
- #17: There are so many uses for Animoto. Librarians/Teachers can upload pictures of students working in the Learning Commons or Maker Spaces. Students can show science or social studies projects. For example, during Black History Month the Librarian can give each student a famous African American to research and share through Animoto. Depending on the grade level, this can be differentiated to meet the needs/levels of all learners. In the classroom, teachers can use Animoto to display students working in Stations. Also, this is a good tool to use when giving directions or listing steps. For example, How to Problem Solve, Add, Subtract, Multiply, Chunk words, Decode, Use a dictionary, etc Finally, displaying students interacting on “Field Trips” will be great for the administrators and parents to see.
- #19: Like any other technology tool, “Animoto” has its pros and cons. Some of the pros include using Animoto is fun and easy. You really just need to have good pictures to upload. You do not need video editing experience because the program edits the videos for you. You can create “free” 30 second video clips. Some of the cons include a limited selection of tools for the “free” trial. You save more money when you choose to be billed annually versus monthly if you decide to become a member. Remember in an earlier slide I mentioned the membership being $9.99 a month if you are billed annually. This means you have to pay 119.88 up front. If you choose to be billed monthly then you will pay 19.99 a month. This is for the Personal Account. The Business and Professional Accounts costs more.
- #20: Create a fun Avatar that speaks on your behalf. Voki allows you to customize your Avatar by changing the characters and background. The free account has its limitations with characters (celebrity) and backgrounds. If you really enjoy using VOKI, you can purchase a membership. Visit the website to get started.
- #21: Here is an example of a VOKI that I created for class. You can share and embed your voki into your website or blog. I created this with the “free” account. I am considering purchasing VOKI classroom so that my students can create VOKI’s for classroom instruction. Voki offers a free, classroom, presenter, and classroom plus presenter memberships.
- #22: Voki classroom allows you to manage your class’s VOKI. Teachers have the option to approve and view their work. The cost is just 29.99 a year and you can include up to 30 students per classroom subscription. Voki Presenter also costs 29.99 a year and allows teachers to organize and create lessons to present to the class. You can save 10 dollars by purchasing the Classroom & Presenter Bundle for 49.99 a year.
- #23: Like any other tool, Voki has its pros and cons. Some of the benefits of using VOKI are engaging students and making learning fun. You have an option to type your message, record your message through your computer’s microphone, or call and record your voice. Teachers should invest in Voki Classroom so that they can manage student accounts instead of having each student set up an account. Everyone that has an individual login must provide an email address. Voki offers lessons that other teachers have shared and you can use in your classroom. Some of the cons include the voki recorder may not translate your message and you may have to actually spell the word phonetically. When you do not subscribe to classroom or presenter, you have a limited number of characters, backgrounds, and tools to use to create your voki. Also, there is a limitation on the number of words you can type in your message when you use the “free” account.
