The Bouncing and Bending of Light How do you think LIGHT TRAVELS? Write down your response in your science notebook and give me a “why?” for your response.
Two Key Assumptions About Light What does assumption mean? 1st Assumption: Light travels in straight lines. 2nd Assumption: Light will bounce off objects in straight lines.
What is reflection?
What kinds of images do you see? In your science notebook: Describe an image that you see on a daily basis Describe your image in terms of color, shape, texture, and fuzzy/sharpness focus You may write in phrases!
Reflection Experiment Creation Using only aluminum foil, you need to create TWO experiments that will show irregular and regular reflection. You need to record your experiment using your data sheet!
Regular Reflection Experiment: Light Waves are Reflected Straight Back The aluminum foil piece must be kept smooth. You will observe an image, such as a pencil, which results in a clear image.
Irregular Reflection Experiment: Light Waves are Reflected at many Different Angles The aluminum foil piece must be crumpled. The other aluminum foil piece will be kept smooth to compare and contrast with the crumpled piece of aluminum foil. You will observe an image, such as a pen, which results in a fuzzy image.
We just saw how light can be reflected two different ways using one material, what happens when light has to travel through from one material to another? Will something change?
Refraction The bending of light at an angle as it passes through materials.
What about density? Density: How tightly or loosely packed a materials atoms are.
Scavenger Hunt It is time to go on a scavenger hunt in this classroom. You have two minutes to find a very dense and not very dense object.
Let’s Analyze Our Objects for Density Use a 1-10 scale 1 is the highest density 5 is medium density 10 is the lowest density Do this in your science notebook for each object collected by your group!
Scientifically Speaking… Will the light speed up if the object is less dense or more dense? Will the light slow down if the if the object is less dense or more dense?
I f a material is less dense, then the light will speed up, whereas if it is more dense the light will slow down.
Create A Refraction Experiment You will be using the following materials: Pencil Clear Plastic Cup Water
Our Refraction Experiment The clear plastic glass will be filled midway with water and the pencil will be dropped in. We are able to see the pencil underwater because the light bends, although the pencil looks like it is cut in half because the light is refracted when it passes through the water.
Lights and Our Animals We know that if a material is more dense, light will slow down. Feel the top of the tank, is it very dense? What happens if we turn on the light above the animals tanks? Write down your predictions in your science notebook!
Animals and Light Record your observations in your science notebook and be ready for a whole class discussion!
