And, with the recent acquisition of Lynda, members are now engaging with professional training content.

  • #13: Personal Profile Branding From knowing the basics to rocking your profile
  • #14: Did you know that your profile is 14 more times more likely to be reviewed if you have a photo than if you don’t have one? Think of your photo as your logo (like what you saw for Apple, Nike and Coca cola), it’s who you are and what you stand for and how others will instantly connect to you (first thing people see in a search besides headline) TIPS – Just you in the shot, don’t need a professional photographer (especially with instagram), profile headshots on campus
  • #15: Craft a one-of-a-kind attention grabbing headline! Your headline is your tagline, your motto, what defines you and your brand. Think of it as that amuse bouche that entices people to click into your profile and read further (for the main course). Think About: Keyword searches – if you want to be found easily by your target audience, add a keyword for your industry in your headline Your passions, your brand, your purpose, your value add What’s unique about you? Something only you bring to the table If reflecting your current role – think about the day to day but how you make the ordinary extraordinary Potential Activity (if have time) Get in groups of three List out your top 5 characteristics that you created earlier in addition to anything that helps to describe the work you do Work together in your group to create a custom headline for each person
  • #16: Draft a compelling summary! Think of your Summary as your opportunity to tell your professional story and give your “elevator pitch” in writing. Your summary should include: An Introduction – to you, your brand, what you are about and what you have accomplished (no need to summarize your experience) Address the bigger picture – it’s good to know you, but always highlight the impact you bring to an organization Call out unique talents – This is your opportunity to dive deeper into what you bring to the table Adding a summary of 40 words or more makes your profile more likely to turn up in a future employer’s search. A good tip is to ensure your summary includes keywords featured in desirable job descriptions for your field. Avoid buzzwords (examples: strategic, team player, creative) and focus on your career accomplishments.
  • #17: Tell your work experience story in detail Your profile is 12 times more likely to be viewed if you have more than one position listed. Experience This is your opportunity to showcase what you currently do and have done in the past. Make this engaging by not just listing word for word what’s on your resume (bullet points) but by really outlining key highlights from your professional journey. Tips: Describe Your Company – Ideally you want to start off each experience with a short one to two sentence description of the company (especially if it’s not well-known) Personalize it – This is YOUR professional journey, so it doesn’t have to be as professional and buttoned up as your resume. Try to outline not only what you did, but key results you achieved in a story that’s a short paragraph or several sentences.
  • #18: Add Rich Media! It’s one thing to talk about what you do, it’s another thing to show people what you do and the impact you bring to the table By adding rich media to your profile you bring your professional brand and work experience to life by telling a compelling story. By adding things like videos, pictures, links, presentations, publications you have been featured in, or interviews you have done, this tells your professional story in an engaging way. ASK: How many of you have worked for company that people have never heard about but did something really cool? Prompt to include rich media in your profile Always beware of the intellectual property piece
  • #19: ASK: How many of you have skills that are endorsed on your profile? Endorsements are a quick way for you to call out specific skill sets (that you want others to be able to easily find) and have others validate these skill sets. The optimal number is unique to each person. Include a mix of high level and niche skills and be specific. Keep in mind, you can showcase which skills appear on your profile and in what order. You can also accept/reject endorsements and block (if random people you don’t know are endorsing you) Get Endorsements -Add skills that your connections can endorse you for and recognize those you’ve worked with on their professional skills. There are over 3 billion endorsements given to date on LinkedIn.
