Links and Entities: The Library Data Revolution
• The Web is moving from strings to things
• Describing entities and their relationships
• Entities can be mined from bib records
• Entities would revolutionize workflows
• Entities will revolutionize discovery
• Vocabulary of the Web – Schema.org
• Search engines route directly to libraries
• Libraries need to syndicate locally
• Systems need to enable syndication
• Linking to hubs of authority
• Setting global context for our resources
• Making Libraries relevant on/in the web
It’s all about the entities
enabled by just another technology

Editor's Notes

  • #4: The web is starting to represent these entity in knowledge cards/graphs The search engines are now all on board – providing information on the entities How would this look if we the libraries did something similar with the information we have been curating So the idea of a knowledge card for libraries is a kind of fashion forward view of how libraries will need to market themselves. I’ll come back to this point a little later in the presentation.
  • #5: We, at OCLC, with our major data ingest and processing techniques – Big Data tech Matching incoming data with what we have Identifying the entities and associating their role attributes Woks – not so far very visible in libraries – important on the web
  • #14: But, what if we started to think about the information in a different way.
  • #15: We’re used to thinking about discovery experience in terms of exposing data from behind-the-scenes in a visually pleasing, useful way. This experience becomes, in a way, a kind of “frame” (click) we use when thinking about a work or an author or subject. The data points are all part of a “picture” we use for discovery, research, reference, etc. And we’re also used to that data coming from a single source (click), the MARC record. Which means we’re also accustomed to thinking about library data as pieces that fit into a bibliographic “frame” of sorts. The record must be complete for the discovery experience to work. The individual elements are, essentially, useless without both a specific, widely used, standard input model and output experience.
  • #16: But in a linked data world – which is what the web is becoming – there is no single, well-established “frame.” There is only data. If we look at a visualization of a generic knowledge card in that way… (click)… all the different data points become
  • #17: But in a linked data world – which is what the web is becoming – there is no single, well-established “frame.” There is only data. If we look at a visualization of a generic knowledge card in that way… (click)… all the different data points become
  • #36: Registration: Make sure library data is stored somewhere (WorldCat) that connects up. Aggregation: Gathering all library collections together at the network level so the whole becomes more attractive on the web. Entification: Describe our data in ways that extract what is most interesting to consumers and partners. Syndication: Make data available on the web by demonstrating value.
