Design Tips
 Contrast - very key; not just of colors, but of weights,
heights, textures
 Repetition – tie individual elements together
 Alignment – for text and objects
 Proximity - keep related images, text, titles together
 Symmetry - can be powerful and calming – we are
attuned to symmetry
 Scale - can draw attention to/away from elements
 Balance – scale, composition, hierarchy
 Know where you want reader’s eye to focus – draw them
there
 E.g. the classic Z-pattern, at right

More Basic Tips
 White space is good and your design friend!
 Transparency levels can create a sense of movement –
use it intentionally
 Rule of thirds – it’s not just for photo composition!
 Pick the right photos, be ready to adjust them –
especially if using with text
 Consider color theory
 Use your brand colors and complementary colors
 By learning some design rules … you know when to
break them!

Let’s Talk Typography …
 Just because there are many fonts to pick from,
doesn’t mean you have to! Don’t choose willy-nilly.
 Size matters – not all typefaces are equal.
Generally – pick typefaces that are similar height
 Kerning = act of adjusting space between
characters to create a more aesthetically pleasing,
easy to read, presentation
 Headers, subheads and matters of scale - use
size to help guide the reader to what is 1st most
important, 2nd most important, so on.
 Also use spacing, weight, color

  • #13: Find the variations of any color – For when you want the other hues or ranges of a selected color and to get the Hex code so you can use online Tints = mix of color with white (increases lightness – top of scale), shade = mix of color + black; Tone = color + grey
  • #14: “art and technique of arranging type” But it’s more than that … How you work with the layout of an item (digital or physical), its grid; the overall color scheme, the design theme, your brand choices and identity, the message to convey. Yes, typography can emotion (make sure what you pick conveys what you meant!). Type forms are designs, created by craftspeople, with talent and experience, and with intent. There are SO MANY awesome free fonts available – many that mimic well-known, pricier versions, but others are unique creations, beautiful in their own right. BUT just b/c so many choices, doesn’t mean you MUST choose; don’t go wild. Sometimes tried/true works well. Helvetica is still great for a reason – it’s a classic beauty. Size matters - Some are fat and wide, some are skinny, some kern tightly, some are loose. Some are taller. Different fonts take up different amounts of space on page or screen. <font-face> = the HTML5 tag bringing full typography to web, allow embedding of different types into web pages
  • #16: Can take body text font-size (base font size) and multiply by ratio, to scale - scale built for harmony
  • #17: You don’t want to just mix n match fonts willy nilly. It’s hard to read. Sometimes you need/want a more formal serif font or a script or cursive font as an accent for headlines – but wonder what to pair it with – this tool shows you good combinations. All are free fonts. (go get font elsewhere)
