How to learn and teach using an LMS
Norhayati Maskat
 Learning Management System

 A.k.a Course Management System (CMS)

 A.k.a Content Management System (CMS)

 A.k.a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
 A GREAT & DYNAMIC tool for learning

 Useless if you don’t know how to use it
    correctly.

 Useless if you don’t want to use it at all.

 Unless you just use it because you have to.
 Storage Bin

 Mainly for Notes and past year exam papers

 These materials are recycled year after year
 Good students will NOPE! I obtained a ‘C’
                              in High School and I
    score A. now I obtained a ‘D’!

 Average students will
    score between B and D.

 Weaker students will
    FAIL.
So, what is the point of having a
Learning Management System
when it does not assist the
 average and weak students to
      get better grades?
It doesn’t take a Genius to figure
               it out!
   There is a mismatch between
the use of LMS and students’
          way of learning!
 Average and Weak – need extra
    coaching to get better grades.
 They have different ways of
    processing information.
 They need longer time to process
    information.
 They learn + understand at their
    own pace.
 Visual

 Auditory

 Kinesthetic
 Identifying which tools in the LMS which
could lead to a better understanding of a
lesson by the average and weak students.

 The “how” on the use of the LMS to assist
average and weak students learn and
understand and able to obtain better grades.

                                  Learning
                  Collaboration via Assessment

                                   LMS

LMS tools Content Block Online Quiz/Tests Blogs or Discussion
                or Course Journals Boards/ Chat
               Documents Rooms

Functions Content Assess /Enhance Reflect Collaborate

Visual Videos Video explaining how Vlog Video chat
                  Podcasts to answer correctly
Films after the quiz is over.

Auditory Notes Audio or podcast or Write in the Type in chat box
Power point written explanation on journals or blogs
                  slides how to answer
                                         correctly.

Kinesthetic Videos Try and try again – Draw or create a Video chat
                  Podcasts gaming strategy until Vlog
Interactive Notes he/she got it right.
 Use the LMS as a learning tool to assist
average and weak students learn better.

 Choose the tools in the LMS and customize it
for the average and weak students to learn
    better.

 Fully utilize the LMS in accommodating
    students with different Learning Styles.
 Takes into consideration the Net-Geners’ way
of processing information i.e. via devices
    found in their era.

 Tapping into the existing Educational
    Theories e.g. Kolb’s cycle, Constructivism,
    Multiple Intelligences simplified etc.
 Create a conducive learning environment for
average and weak students to learn:
    a. At their own pace
    b. At their own time
    c. Available to them 24/7
    d. Non-threatening environment
    e. In their comfort zone
     f. Using the device they know how to use.
 That’s all folks!

 All the Best!

 Bye!
