Paolo Nutini is a well astablished singer songwriter across the world. He had hit
singles with ‘Jenny Don’t be Hasty’, ‘Rewind’ and ‘Pencil Full of Lead’. However,
one of his more populr songs received critisism for it’s ‘simple’ music video. The
track peaked at 107 in the U.S billboard charts and only 21 in the UK singles
charts. Therefore, I am going to re-create a music video for this song to gain
more recognition for the artist and myself as video producer.
Page | 4
The music video I am going to create follows the life of a male teenager whos
seems to be going through some hard times. However, when he wakes up and
slips into to his brand new pair of shoes, he becomes more confident within
himself and is ready to take on the day. I don’t want my video to be a reinactment
of the original but want it to relate to the song lyrics which may make some
similarities between mine and the original.
The video will start off in a black and white effect, this effect will continue until
he puts on his new shoes. Similar to the effect used in the original ‘Wizard of Oz’
film. This will accentuate the symbolism of the shoes in the video and will work
as an intriging element for the audience. The video will include lots of mid shots
and close ups of the singer with his guitar. This will give of lots of the emotion
portrated in the lyrics through the actors facial expressions and mannerisms.
Contrasted to this, there will also be plenty of long panning shots of village and
town communities. This will give the video a well established sceneray and add
to the context of the song.
Target Audience
My advert will be targeted at mainstreamers. This is partly because this category
of people already enjoy and listen to this genre of music. However, as it is a very
Page | 5
broard and popular category, it may be difficult to create something that appeals
to everyone. The obvious way to tackle this problem is to follow the codes and
conventions of existing music videos of this genre.
In terms of psychographics, less popular music
such as classical may slot in the ‘A’ or ‘B’
category of the SOC. But with more popular
mainstream music, it would be hard too
generalise the song to just one of the
categories. However, it would probably sway
slightly more to the ‘C2’, ‘D’ and ‘E’ sections.
Competitors
When researching into competitors, I found plenty of similar British artists that
have found success through hit singles and award winning music videos. Three
artists that stood out as real competitors were Ben Howards, Jake Bugg and
James Morrison. Each of these artists’s makes similar acoustic style music like
Paolo Nutini, all using conventional style music videos. A lot of them include
various shots of natural wooded areas and large landscapes (especially Ben
Howard’s). However my video will differ and contrast to these by using rural
sceneries and busy town cultures.

Camera Operator – Dave Emery http://www.daveemery.co.uk/
Ben Howard Jake Bugg James Morrison
Page | 7
Dave Emery is a well established camera operator who has worked on a number
of different areas within the industry. However, I was intrigued by his regular
work at top music festivals. These include; Glastonbury, Reading Festival, V
Festival, Sonisphere and many more. His YouTube channel promotes videos he
has filmed: http://www.youtube.com/daveemerylimited - including one-shot
music numbers on the jib for Alicia Keys, Robbie Williams and Rizzle Kicks.
Lighting – Piers Cox http://www.pierscox.com/
Piers Cox has worked in several areas of television including a lot of music based
productions. The price to hire him includes his equipment and travel. His
previous work includes live MTV shows, and various music videos.
Page | 8
Actor – Oliver Mayer
Oliver is a young, local and well established actor. He has been in several theatre
productions, fringe music videos and adverts. He is a talented musician which
makes him perfect for the role in the music video. He can also accompany the
instruments with a great singing voice, this will make the lip syncing in the video
look more natural. As he is willing to promote himself as an actor, he will do the
video for free.
My Responsibilities
Page | 9
• Director
• Sound Op (Playback)
• Floor Manager
• TAM (Talents and artist relations)
• Location
• Health and Safety
I am going to direct the music video. This will mean I will be able to produce the
it in the style I want, rather than explaining the ideas to someone else. As the
sound picked up on the camera won’t be used, I won’t need to hire a sound
operator. However, I will be using a PA system for playback. I have decided to
use this actor as I know him personally and know he work in a professional
manner.
Personnal Requirements
All cast and crew members will be staying in the Red Lion hotel in Henley on
Thames. They will be there for 4 nights starting from 27/05/13 till 30/05/13.
Page | 10
Equipment Transport
Most of the filming will be shot in Henley and will be in walking distance of the
hotel. However, to get the equipment to the location a van will need to be hired
to transport it.
A local car hire company will work perfectly in terms of collection and
practicality.

Travel
When filming in Henley, the crew and cast are in walking distance of the location
sets. However there are bits of filming that need to be done in a close by village
and town. (Shiplake and Reading).
Both are easily accessible by train:
