LO:2 Threading a Needle

- 3. OBJECTIVES • Measure the most manageable length of thread for hand sewing. • Prepare the thread to insert through the eye of a needle. • Tie a knot in the end of the thread using two different procedures.
- 5. Cut a thread strand 16” long. A longer strand will tangle, creating knots in the thread.
- 6. Cut the end of the thread on an angle to reduce the thickness. Cut on a 45o angle.
- 7. Moisten the tip of the thread, and flatten it with your fingers. It’s easier to thread the eye with a stiffer, thinner tip
- 9. Insert the flattened end of the thread through the eye of the needle. Use a white background for greater contrast and ease of threading
- 11. Creating a knot in the end of the thread prevents the thread from pulling through the fabric when you are sewing. I am using a very large needle and thick thread. Therefore, I will wrap the needle five times. To make a smaller knot with thinner thread, you should wrap the needle only two or three times.
- 12. The Needle Wrap Knotting the Thread
- 13. Take the bottom end of the thread, and lay it along the needle.
- 14. Hold the end of the thread against the needle near the eye. Using your free hand, make two to five wraps around the needle with the thread. Pinch the needle and thread The eye of the needle. Bring thread up and over the needle
- 16. Pull the needle through the wrapped thread. Pull needle through the knot
- 17. Pull the needle away from the wrapped thread. Pull thread away from the knot
- 18. The Finished Knot Trim away any the excess thread below the knot with a pair of scissors.
- 19. The Thread Roll Knotting the Thread
- 20. Hold the end of the thread in one hand between the thumb and middle finger. Wrap the thread around your pointer finger with the other hand to form an X, as is show in the next slide End of thread

- 22. Roll the thread loop toward the tip of your finger by pushing it with your thumb.
- 23. Roll the thread off the tip of your finger.
- 24. Remove a loop from your fingertip.
- 25. Lightly hold the thread at the top of the loop with your thumb and forefinger of one hand while pulling the needle away from the the knot. Pull the thread away from the knot
- 26. Trim off any excess that extends below the knot. t

- 28. In this component, you have learning how to thread a needle and two different techniques for tying an end knot. These are two of the most basic of hand sewing techniques. You might want to practice each knotting technique until you find the one that is the most comfortable for you.

- 33. 1. Wrap the thread around your finger tip to form an X. 2. Roll the X towards your fingertip with your thumb. 3. Remove the loop from your fingertip. 4. Hold the thread in one hand. 5. Hold the thread just above the loop In the other hand. 6. Pull the thread upwards, away from the loop.
