Introduction to Long Division
• Definition: Long division is a method used to divide large numbers by
breaking down the division into simpler steps.
• Purpose: It helps solve division problems
when the divisor has multiple digits.
• Example: Dividing 256 by 4.
Steps of Long Division
• 1. Divide: How many times does the divisor fit into the first digit(s) of the
dividend?
• 2. Multiply: Multiply the divisor by the
quotient from Step 1.
• 3. Subtract: Subtract the result from the
number you divided.
• 4. Bring Down: Bring down the next digit of
the dividend.
• Repeat these steps until all digits are brought
down.
Example Problem: 432 ÷ 3
• 1. Divide: 3 goes into 4 one time.
• 2. Multiply: 1 × 3 = 3.
• 3. Subtract: 4 - 3 = 1.
• 4. Bring Down: Bring down the 3 to make 13.
• Repeat until you get the answer.
• Answer: 432 ÷ 3 = 144
Practice Problems
• Try solving these:
• - 128 ÷ 4
• - 256 ÷ 8
• - 396 ÷ 6
• Check your answers by multiplying the
quotient by the divisor.
