Business process maturity models (BPMMs)
from a user’s perspective.

CONFENIS2012 – Amy Van Looy – 21/09/2012 1
Business process maturity
•Measure to indicate how excellent BPs can perform
                         •Collection of capabilities
                         •Sequence of levels
                         •Example: OMG-BPMM (2008)
Level 5 - Innovating • Continuously improving practices

Level 4 - Predictable • Quantitatively managed practices

             Level 3 - Standardised • Standardised end-to-end practices

Level 2 - Managed • Repeatable practices within the work unit
                         CONFENIS2012 – Amy Van Looy – 21/09/2012 2
Level 1 - Initial • Ad hoc practices
Problem statement
• Many BPMMs exist (N=69, Q2 2010)
• But, literature limited to design perspective
 creating a design theory
 designing BPMMs accordingly

What about a user’s perspective?

CONFENIS2012 – Amy Van Looy – 21/09/2012 3
Research question
Which criteria help organisations choose a BPMM?

CONFENIS2012 – Amy Van Looy – 21/09/2012 4
Methodology
• Content analysis (N=69 BPMMs)
• Delphi study (N=22 experts; 5 rounds)
=> List of 14 decision criteria
• Analytical Hierarchy Process
=> Weighed criteria & evaluation scores
• Decision table design
• Case studies
CONFENIS2012 – Amy Van Looy – 21/09/2012 5
1) Assessment availability: questions publicly known or only for assessors?
2) Data collection: objective (document review) or subjective (e.g. interview)?
3) Assessment duration: day, week or longer?
4) Nr. of questions: insights versus feasibility and duration?
5) Rating scale: quantitative and/or qualitative data?
6) Respondents: only internal or also external stakeholders?
7) Architecture details: level of guidance (e.g. descriptive or prescriptive)?
8) Architecture type: with capability levels, maturity levels or both?
9) Capabilities: what to assess and improve?
10) Nr. of processes: for (one or more) specific processes or all processes?
11) Type of processes: for generic processes, supply chains, collaborations?
12) Costs: free or charged?
13) Purpose: only raising awareness, or also benchmarking or certification?
14) Validation: with(out) empirical evidence for efficiency and effectiveness?
