- 2. WHAT IS AN I/O MODULE? A device which is connected to an I/O module of computer is called a peripheral device. The input/output module (I/O module) is normally connected to the computer system on one end and one or more input/output devices on the other. 2
- 3. MAJOR FUNCTION OF I/O MODULE : This module has two major functions: Interface to the processor and memory via the system bus or central switch . Interface to one or more peripheral devices by tailored data links. The major functions or requirements for an i/o module fall into the following catagories: ►Control and Timing ► Processor communication ► Device communication ► Data buffering ► Error detection 3

- 5. WHY ARE I/O DEVICES NECESSARY FOR A COMPUTER SYSTEM? I/O devices are the pieces of hardware used by a human (or other system) to communicate with a computer. The CPU and its supporting circuitry may provide memory-mapped I/O that is used in low- level computer programming, such as in the implementation of device drivers, or may provide access to I/O channels. 5
