Making do and Making good: How not to waste a good crisis
One Laptop per Child… is still criticised along
the following lines: “Negroponte believes that
you can give a child a laptop and walk away.”
Whether I ever believed that or not is now
secondary. It became such a refrain that I finally
asked myself about a year ago: “What if you
could?”
Nicholas Negroponte, 2011

Technological breakthroughs often require further
developments to make them broadly applicable.
… while Thomas Newcomen built the first successful
steam engine in 1712, it was not until about 1765
that major improvements in the engine by James
Watt made it suitable for factory use.
Still-later improvements, which included the
addition of a governor and rotary movement, made
the steam engine a huge economic success in the
1800s.
Kliesen & Wheelock, 2001
innovation takes decades to sink in
Six decades into the computer revolution, four decades
since the invention of the microprocessor, and two decades
into the rise of the modern Internet, all of the technology
required to transform industries through software finally
works and can be widely delivered at global scale.
Over two billion people now use the broadband Internet,
up from perhaps 50 million a decade ago… In the next 10
years, I expect at least five billion people worldwide to
own smartphones, giving every individual with such a
phone instant access to the full power of the Internet, every
moment of every day.
Marc Andreessen, 2011

Making do and Making good: How not to waste a good crisis
If you want to teach
people a new way of
thinking, don’t bother
trying to teach them.
Instead, give them a
tool, the use of which
will lead to new ways of
thinking.
