The Obama Administration launched a 'National Big Data Research and Development Initiative' in 2012 with over $200 million in commitments from six Federal departments and agencies to improve tools and techniques for analyzing large amounts of data. The Administration is working to make government and corporate data available to fuel innovation. As the Initiative enters its second year, Federal agencies are encouraging multiple stakeholders to develop Big Data projects focusing on technologies to support Big Data analytics, expanding the Big Data workforce, and applying Big Data to improve key outcomes. Stakeholders are asked to submit two-page summaries of potential projects by September 2, 2013 identifying goals, participating stakeholders, committed resources, and a point of contact.
