GEOGRAPHIC
 Implies that locations of the data items are known, or
can be calculated, in terms of Geographic coordinates
(Latitude, Longitude)
INFORMATION
 Implies that the data in a GIS are organized to yield
useful knowledge, often as colored maps and images,
but also as statistical graphics, tables, and various on-
screen responses to interactive queries.
SYSTEM
 Implies that a GIS is made up from several inter-
related and linked components with different
functions. Thus, GIS have functional capabilities for
data capture, input, manipulation, transformation,
visualization, combinations, query, analysis, modeling
and output.
KEY COMPONENT OF GIS
HARDWARE
 Used in stand-alone or networked configurations.
 Chief part of GIS such as Computer etc.
 Help to run centralized computer servers to desktop
SOFTWRAE
 Analyze and display geographic information.
 Provides function and tools needed.
DATA
Collects the geographic and other tabular data
It assemble to use specifications and requirements
Integrate spatial data with other existing data resources
Key functionality is to store the data.
PEOPLE
 Developers and users are quiet important.
 Ranges from Specialists to Normal Users
PROCEDURE
 Drafting Designs
 Implementing Plans
 Integration into the business strategy and operation
 Requires necessary investments in hardware and
software

CREATING GIS
ELEMENT OF GIS
 The location of the geographic information –
maps use a coordinate system to allow locations
to be read
 The shape (geometry) of the geographic
information – the shape of the features and
themes are drawn onto the map
 The description of the geographic information – a
legend provides descriptions of the shapes
drawn on the map
ELEMENT OF GIS
USES OF GIS
 GIS has evolved into a technology that is used
by a huge number of industries and agencies to
help plan, design, engineer, build and maintain
information infrastructures that effects our
everyday lives. The table below lists common
users of GIS
USES OF GIS
INDUSTRY US OF GIS
 Police
 Transport
 Oil
 Emergency
departments e.g.
ambulance
 Crime mapping to target
resources
 Monitoring Routes
 Monitoring ships and
managing pipelines
 Planning quickest
routes
