Management Information System(MIS)
What is MIS?
MIS is basically concerned with processing data into information and is then
communicated to the various departments in an organisation for appropriate
decision making.
• Right information
• To the right person
• At the right place
• In the right form
• At the right cost
It provides accurate and timely information.
To support management in decision making.
Definition of MIS:
• MIS is defined as an integrated system of man and machine for providing the
information to support the operations, the management and the decision making
functions in the organization.
• MIS is defined as a set of related processes interacting together to provide
processed data to managers at various level to fulfil various requirements in
organisations.
Objectives of MIS:
•It helps manager with accurate and timely information.
•It provide best services to customer which helps in
competitive advantages.
•It provide relevant information for decision making.
Features of MIS:
•Management oriented
•Timeliness
•Integrated
•Simplicity
•Reliability
Advantages of MIS:
• It helps companies to highlight their strengths and weaknesses due to the presence
of revenue reports, employees performance records etc.,
• It giving overall picture of the company and acting as a communication and
planning tool.
• The effective management of customer data can help the company to perform
direct marketing and promotion activities.
• In competitive world information is an important asset. The consumer buying
trends and behaviours can predicate by the analysis of sales and revenue report
from each operation region of the company.
Limitations of MIS:
• It is expensive to create and implement.
• It is time consuming.
• It lacks flexibility.
• It capture wrong or incomplete information.
Various types of MIS
• Transaction Processing System(TPS):
Management information system(MIS) produce fixed, regularly scheduled
reports based on data extracted and summarised from the firms underlying
processes transaction processing systems to middle and operational level
managers to identify and inform structured and semi- structured decision
problems.
• Decision support system (DSS):
DSS are computer program applications used by middle
management to compile information from a wide range of sources
to support problem solving and decision making.
• Executive support system (ESS):
ESS is a reporting tool that provides quick access to summarized
reports coming from all company levels and departments such as
accounting, human resource and operations.
• Office automation systems(OAS)
It support communication and productivity in the enterprise by automating
work flow and eliminating bottlenecks. It may be implemented at any and all
levels of management.
• Marketing information system:
They are MIS designed specifically for managing the marketing aspects of the
business.
