Editor's Notes

  • #3: The University utilizes technology in the classroom as well on the student web site. Phoenix Connect allows students to create profiles much like users do on Facebook although this resource allows students to connect to others working toward or in higher education at University of Phoenix.Discussion boards are used to communicate about topics and some discussion boards can be used to talk to other students about topics other than in class. The class/team thread allows students to work in forum designed for just those members of the team. Smart phone apps allow students to post and receive updates on the go and with alerts he or she is sure to get urgent messages.iPhone app again allows the iPhone user to access his or her classroom and stay on top of important items each week.Web 2.0 tools help us experience the technology we will use outside of the classroom as instructors, trainers, or desired field of work.
  • #4: There are many advantages of using technology in the virtual classroom including engaging students. In our fast paced society we want to be able to access our lessons wherever we are and adult learners want to see examples to understand how the material relates to his or her life. Technology such as blogs and chat rooms allow students to collaborate on projects and share ideas. Video conferencing tools such as WebEx allow students to share and review documents while communicating through the video camera in the computer.
  • #5: There are some concerns or issues with implementing technology tools. When software or programs are not compatible there are major issues to address. This can cause a student to become frustrated and quit due to the issues of being able to use the required programs. The inability to connect to the internet is a common and frustrating experience. When students have a back-up plan this can be prevented but when it is near a deadline the stress and lack of planning can cause issues.Computer literacy levels vary depending on the student and his or her background. Some students have used many types of technology in life and work so they are able to adapt quickly while others have not worked with technology and do not use technology for personal use which makes the learning curve much greater and challenging.Adult learners have to be self-motivated to meet the requirements of each class and they have to be just as self-motivated to learn new technologies to be able to use them in the future.
  • #6: When one is implementing technology there are things to consider before they put them in place. You need to consider if you have the tools to make it adaptable to work with tablets, smart phones, and PCs. The ongoing PC vs. Mac debate will be present so making tools that work on both types of systems has to be considered. Does the technology fall so far off the beaten path that it doesn’t line up with the end goal? How many upgrades will be required, how much time will that take, and how much will it cost?
  • #7: More considerations include: How accessible is the program or software you intend to use? Is this technology new, cutting edge, or has it seen it’s day? Will this stick around for a while or should you consider looking at something that will? Is this going to allow interaction by multiple people? Interaction is key in adult learning. Can this product expand to meet the changing needs of students?
  • #8: Facilitators have to manage change in the classroom. Some of the key points about managing technology in the classroom are:The appearance of the classroom has changed. Classes are equipped with conferencing tools and computers so instructors have to manage these tools and determine how to best utilize the new technology to enhance the learning experience.“The learning environment is no longer reflected by frontal teaching where the teacher is actively engaged in front and the student passively seated” (Deutsch, 2005, p. 1).Learning institutions work to create rigorous curriculum that drives student performance. Tests and assignments are no longer based on the class lecture they are based on the materials and interaction students have with other students as well as his or her facilitator.
  • #9: Some technology to consider using with students include:We are an educational turning point and the computer is helping us shape the new face of the classroom and how materials are created for today’s student. The software available today helps us gain a better understanding of business and educational concepts. There are many organizations that provide large discounts on software for students.“Digitizing video clips, using spreadsheet software to track assignments and grades” (Janelli, 1999-2012, p. 1).
  • #10: There are ways that we can help ourselves as we manage technology tools.Have clear and good communication with the end user. If you need to get some help to get the right answer make sure you do so and are not just making an educated guess.Ask for feedback from the students or participants. They will usually let you know what worked for them and what was confusing or challenging.Have a team ready to help make modifications and changes for future versions or to help implement new technologies.Always have a back-up plan. When all else fails turn to pen and paper. You can tell them you want them to experience how challenge class was before technology became part of education.
