Manipulatives

 These are objects that can be viewed
and handled in a learning setting.
 They attract student attention and
    promote learning because students can
    handle and inspect them.
3 Types of Manipulatives

 Real Objects

 Models

 Mock-ups
Real Objects

 These are objects that are especially
    appropriate for learners who are
    encountering a subject about which
they have had little direct experience
    in their daily lives.
 Real objects may be used as is,
or you may modify them to
    enhance instruction.

 Examples of modification
    include: Cutaways, Specimens,
    and Exhibits.
Cutaways

 These are devices such as
machines with one side cut away
to allow close observation of their
    inner working.

Specimens

 These are actual plants, animals, or

    parts thereof preserved for convenient

    inspection.

Exhibits

 These are collections of artifacts

    brought together with printed

    information to illustrate point.
Museum Exhibits
Models

 These are three-dimensional

    representation of real objects.

 It can provide learning experiences

    that real things cannot provide.

Mock–Ups

 It is a simplified representations of
    complex devices.
 It clarify the complex.
 They are sometimes constructed as
working models to illustrate the basic
    operations of a real device.

Simulator

 It is a sophisticated type of mock-up.

 It is a device that allows learners to
experience the important aspects of a
    real-life activity without the risks.

Computer Software and Manipulatives

   Traditional instructional materials are
      being incorporated into software
      programs.
 There is an efficient use of computer
      and real learning experiences for
      students.
Multimedia Kits

 This is a collection of teaching/learning
materials involving more than one type
of medium and organized around a
    single topic.
 Main purpose is to give learners a
    chance at firsthand learning.
 Some multimedia kits are designed for
teacher to use in classroom presentation.
Others are designed for use by individual
    students or by small group.

Using Manipulatives in the Classroom

 Familiarize yourself with the object or
     model before using.
  Practice your presentation.
 Be sure your audience does not get
     the wrong impression.
 Encourage students to handle and
    manipulate the objects and models
    under study.

 Store objects out of sight when not
    using them for instruction.
When to Use Manipulatives
           Guidelines Examples

…encountering a subject for which Using sand trays for younger
they have had little direct students to practice writing letters.

…using concrete objects to build a Building an algebra problem with
foundation for understanding base-10 blocks for gifted
       abstract concepts elementary students.

    …engaging in real-world Using a mock-up of a traffic light to
