It can also be used as a reminder to returning
teachers of resources currently available.
We encourage the sharing of this across the whole
faculty. Maps101 is truly a cross-curricular resource
and can benefit teachers in Civics, Math, Science,
Special Education, Spanish/ELL and World Cultures
as well as Geography and History.

User Login
• Check with your technology administrator
for your login information.
• Some schools may have IP authentication,
meaning that no login is required from a
school computer. However for remote
access (eg students from home) the current
Username and Password is required.
• Maps101 permits unlimited simultaneous
logins with a site subscription.
• To get started visit www.maps101.com and
click the Subscriber Login button.
1. Home Page Navigation
Reach any site section from the home
page. Browse by subject, resource type or
collection.
• Use the left side controls to browse site
sections.
• Watch out for highlighted seasonal
content.
• Subscribe to the Newsletter to keep up
with new materials and ideas.
• Access ‘Field Trip Library’ from the left
side navigation.
2. Geography News Network (GNN)
Geography News Network features topical
news articles written from a geographic
perspective for students.
1. Download as a pdf for distribution (1).
2. Available in Spanish translation (2).
3. Includes critical thinking questions (3).
4. Citations and sources provide (4).
5. For 2015 we will be adding podcasts to the
GNN resource. A full collection of GNN
podcasts is available for free download in
the iTunes store and through the Stitcher
App.
3. Field Trip Library
Virtual Field Trip collections explain complex
topics in a geographic and chronological
context. Use for developing vocabulary,
critical thinking skills, geographic and visual
literacy with 21st Century skills
1. Use on any internet connected device
2. Navigate by collection, then by field trip
3. Collections available for lower grade
students

4. Historical Outline Maps
Unlabeled outline maps for key historic
events. Use to reinforce familiarity with
significant locations and boundaries.
1. Labeled and unlabeled versions provided
2. Ask students to add labels or point out
specific places, or digitally manipulate
maps to show learning
3. Download as a .pdf or .png graphic,
project or email – create content/standard
specific materials you can’t find elsewhere.

4. Teach the geography of the United States
and the world with simplified, easy-reader

We save you time by making collections of
materials available in one location. Collections
usually feature in the ‘Resources’ control
panel at the bottom right of the home page.

9. Using Mapsketch
Mapsketch is versatile tool which allows the
user to take any map and add notes and
incidental graphics.
1. Add radius rings, freehand drawing,
shading and text labels to your map.
2. Save as a .PNG file, print or email your
finished map.
3. Use with almost any Maps101 map.
10. Classroom Resources
Maps101 includes a wealth of lesson plans
and activities to help you use the resource
more effectively.
1. Develop map skills from an early age.
2. Use geography skill builders to promote
analytical thinking and broaden
understanding of events.
3. Classroom activities incorporate Maps101
videos, maps, news articles and games.
4. Glossaries and pronunciation gazetteer in
English and Spanish.
11. Standards
Many Maps101 lesson plans and materials are
aligned with Common Core and State
Standards. Users can search by grade level
and appropriate standards.
The link to the standards search tool is
located at the foot of each page under ‘State
Standards’.
12. New in 2015
We continue to add content to the resource on
a weekly basis in the form of GNN, GNN
Podcasts and Map of the Week. Based on your
feedback we are also adding useful new
feature-sets such as:
• Historical Outline Maps – Over 100 new
maps being added this fall
• Math Activities – Teach math with these
great quizzes based on Maps101 materials
• Field Trip collections – Early Learner, Space,
Weather, Science, US History & ‘Travel the
