Meaning
Material handling is the combination of
art and science of:
• Moving
• Storing
• Protecting
• Loading,
• Unloading
• controlling the material
• Material handling means providing the
• ◦
• Right Amount
• ◦
• of the Right Material
• ◦
• in the Right condition
• ◦
• at the Right place
• ◦
• in the Right position
• ◦
• in the Right sequence
• ◦
• in the Right time
• ◦
• for the Right price/cost
• ◦
• by the Right method( Manual/ Automated /semi automated
•
• In a typical manufacturing facility:
• ◦
• 25% of the work force is used in material
handling
• ◦
• 55% of the factory floor is reserved for it
• ◦
• 87% of the production time!
• ◦
• It may represent 15% to 70% of the total cost
generated in the company
• 
Where Material Handling takes Place
• At Storage point
• At Production Floor/shop floor
• At Distribution/warehouse Point
• At Transportation Point
• At Delivery point
• Goals of material handling:
• ◦
• Reduce unit costs of production
• ◦
• Reduce damages, and provide for protection of
materials
• Promote increased use of facilities
• Maintain or improve product quality,
• ◦
• Promote safety and improve working conditions
• ◦
• Promote productivity

MH Principles
• Planning principle: All Material Handling
Activities should be planned
• Space utilization principle: Make optimum
use of cubic space
• Unit load principle: Increase quantity, size,
weight of load handled
Move a lot of items at a time rather to move each one of them
individually”
Gravity principle: Utilize gravity to move a
material wherever practicable
• Simplification principle: Reduce combine or
eliminate unnecessary movement and/or
equipment
• Safety principle:Provide for safe handling
methods and equipment(Hazardous
Materials/explosive materials
• Mechanization principle:Use mechanical or
automated material handling equipment.
• Maintenance principle:Plan for preventive
maintenance or scheduled repair of all
handling equipment
• Capacity principle: Use handling equipment to help
achieve its full capacity
• Performance principle: Determine efficiency of
handling performance in terms of cost per unit handled
which is the primary criterion
• Reduce or eliminate, long and complicated movements
• Eliminate Rehandling
• Move in a direct path and avoid back tracking
• Use concept of economic order quantities and
economic lot sizes.
• Proper instructions and training for safe operation to
the operators
• Vehicles, conveyors, containers etc. should be loaded
to full capacity
• There should be minimum number of
handlings.
• Manual handling should be eliminated.
• Materials are assembled into a unit load for
economy of handling and storage.
