IntroductionMusic MagazineRock/Indie magazine
My magazine was aimed at people aged 16-24 years old mainly girls as there is very little things for girls around in the magazine industry for this genre of magazine.
I worked by myself
My images were taken in and around a graveyard In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?Example red, black, white, and green. These colours compliment each other and go with the genre.I have included a barcode with the issue number and the price on.
My magazine also has the date on it.Ways in which it challenges conventions Instead of just using boxes for my strap lines the bottom one has more of a shape making it more interesting.
I have also used a different shape around my ‘Gigs and tours’ bit to add variation. The shape I used kind of has a grungy effect.
I have used a solo artist which is a girl which is different because most rock magazines tend to have either boys on the front or boy groups.Typical conventionsI have used a large mast head so people are able to see what my magazine id called.
I have used strap lines at the top and bottom of my magazine to give more information to the reader.
A medium shot has been used for my image using direct address to draw the reader in.
I have used larger text for my artist so people can see who she is and get a bit of information of the article.
There is subheadings to show more articles inside.

  • 13. I have used a colour scheme that follows the indie/rock theme. ForQ1 continued… contents pageTypical conventions I have included a clear heading so people can tell it is the contents page.
  • 14. There is a clear indication of what articles are on what pages.
  • 15. There is a competition which there often is in magazines which attracts the audience.
  • 16. There is pictures of my main artist inside.Ways in which it challenges conventions I have got patterns around some of my images and text. This makes the magazine look a lot more interesting and it helps draw your eye to the text and images.
  • 17. I have used a different shape not just a box around my ‘Free posters’. Which again has the kind of grungy effect which makes it different.
  • 18. I have used a tinted background instead of a solid one because as I looked at other magazines they all had solid backgrounds and I wanted something different.Q1 continued… ArticleWays in which it is challenges conventionsI have made sure the title stands out by using 3 main colours, white, red and green. It draws your attention to the title and makes you want to read along. It also follows the colour scheme throughout the magazine which makes it a lot more appealing to the eye.Typical Conventions The colour scheme has been continued throughout sticking with the genre.
  • 19. I have done a simple question and answer whilst interviewing my artist.
  • 20. I have quoted parts from the interview.
  • 21. I have used a large image of the artist and a smaller one.Q2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?1. I have represented young female artists with the genre Indie/Rock. I have represented them by the costumes I have used the colours and lighting and the setting of my photographs. By looking at other artists I managed to make my artist look similar to them.2. I have created her image by looking at another artist, Hayley from Paramore, to see what kind of style I need to aim for. She is wearing a black t-shirt as is my artist. She has different coloured hair as does my artist. They are both taken against a background.By looking at other magazines such as Kerrang I have come up with a colour scheme of black, red white and green and continued it throughout my magazine. These colours Ithought best represented the genre indie/rock. By looking at other artists Iwas able to come up with the costume which is mainly made up of black and the correct setting up against a brick wall. I think this best represents the older teenage female market so will attract a female audience. I have aimed for a female audience because when I researched rock magazines there wasn’t anything for the female audience. I have made sure that on my contents page there is things for girls such as make up and hair tips etc.
  • 22. Q3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?I think IPC would be best to distribute my magazine because they have distributed the magazine ‘NME’ and other Indie/Rock based magazines which is what category my magazine falls into. They would want to distribute my magazine because opposed to other magazines mine is aimed at mainly girls but boys as well. I include new upcoming artists as well as known artists whereas other magazines just include well known bands.
  • 23. Q4. Who would be the audience for your media product?Gender: male and female (mainly female)Age: Between 16-24Interests: going to concerts, hearing about artists lives, the music industry in general, Hearing about new artists in the businessMusic genre they are interested in: Indie and rock sometimes rapMusic idols: Kings of Leon, Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Panic at the Disco, Bullet for my Valentine. My questionnaire results showed that the females in my questionnaire said that they struggled to find magazines for their age group with a rock/indie genre. They said they would like old artists and upcoming ones as well as more things for girls so Iincluded things like fashion tips and make up tips.
  • 24. Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?I took the information from my questionnaire to find out what would attract my audience and added it into my magazine.Choice of title: I chose to name it Censored because I thought the name was very well suited and went very well with the genre. Key image: For my image on my front cover I used direct address to draw the audience in and want to buy it. I used dark costume (black) to keep with the indie/Rock theme. It was also taken up against a brick wall which had a red tint to it which complimented my colour scheme making it more attractive.Storylines: I have used the names of other famous celebrities so people want to find out about their other favourite artists.Articles on the contents page: I made sure that all the stories onmy front page were featured in my contents page but with a few more added. I have tried to target the girls in my target audience by putting things in such as fashion tips and make-up tips.Feature Article: I wrote my article as an interview with questions and answers. When I wrote my article I made sure it flowed and make sure that the answers given by my artist were down to earth and seemed real as that is what they are normally like in an indie/rock magazine. By using questions and answers it makes browsing easier and it easier to read.
  • 25. Q6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? When I was making my media magazine I learnt how to use many different technologies such as:Photoshop- I used this to cut out my images out and edit them ready to use on my front cover contents page and featured article. I used the cut out tool then clicked all around the image to get rid of the background and keep the image.Strength- Allows you to use a better background as you can cut the image out.Weakness- Takes a lot of time and effort. In Design- This was where I put my magazine together. Here I put all the backgrounds on and added all my texts and different fonts.Strength- I can make my magazine how I like it with the backgrounds i want and the shapes I want.Weakness- It was hard to get some of the shapes I wanted onto my magazine.Blogger- This is where I logged all my work and what I was doing and when I was doing it. I put all my research and planning on here, my final product and my audience feedback.Strength- Allows people to see what I am doing on my magazine at each stage.Weakness- Sometimes it was unreliable.
  • 26. Q7. Looking back at your preliminary task, What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?Comparing both the magazines to each other there is a significant difference between them such as:My preliminary task is very plain as it just has a black background and my magazine has a much interesting brick background.
  • 27. My preliminary task is very boring and has boring text and shapes on it whereas my magazine has various text and different shapes on which gives it a much more appealing look.
  • 28. The colour scheme goes a lot better on my final product as the colours work well together but on my preliminary task they kind of clash.
  • 29. There is a lot of empty space on my first magazine which makes it look unappealing and it does not attract the eye to it. With my final product I made sure that I tried to fill up empty spaces but the brick background helps to cover the blank spaces in a way and makes it look a it fuller.
  • 30. I learnt to cut my images out neater.
  • 31. I learnt how to draw the attention to my magazine instead of it being boring.ConclusionOverall I am happy with my magazine however some changes could of been made.WeaknessesMy contents page looks a bit rushed as I had trouble with the background colour so it is patchy and doesn’t look that professional. Therefore I should of made sure I had time to make sure is correct. Need better time management. Strengths It sticks to the Indie/Rock theme throughout especially with the colour scheme.
  • 32. It represents the target audience well with the solo girl artist on the front and the colour scheme.
  • 33. All my photographs look professional and show that I have done something different by taking them outside in different places not just inside.
  • 34. The layout look interesting and draws the reader into it.
  • 35. It has its own unique style. In my opinion i think my article look and sounds like a real magazine. The conversation flows well and represents the Indie/Rock world very well. They never seem to care what they say or do and my article shows that very well. I think I have made it meaningful by taking professional looking pictures and using other feature articles realistic and interesting.
