- The melting point is the temperature at which a solid transitions to a liquid. Pure compounds typically melt over a narrow 1-2°C range. Impurities lower and broaden the melting point range.
- The eutectic temperature is the lowest melting point for a mixture of two compounds. At the eutectic composition and temperature, the solid mixtures are in equilibrium with the liquid mixture.
- To take a melting point, pack crystals into a capillary tube and place in a melting point apparatus. Slowly heat and record the temperatures at which melting begins and is complete to obtain the melting point range.
