• The term metacognition has its orgin from the
Greek word ‘meta’ and the Latin word ‘cognitio’.
• Meta means higher or beyond, and cognitio
means thinking.
• Thus metacognition means thinking higher or
thinking beyond
• That is, thinking beyond the normal process of
thinking.

introduced by Flevell in 1979, to
refer to one’s knowledge
concerning one’s own cognitive
process or anything related to
them
• Metacognition is the act of
thinking about thinking.
• It is defined as “Cognition about
Cognition” or “Knowing about
Knowing”

Definition of Metacognition
• According to Flevell, Metacognition is
an individuals knowledge of their own
cognitive processes and their ability to
control these processes by organizing,
monitoring and modifying them as a
function of learning.
• According to Billingsley and Wildman,
metacognition refers to knowledge and
self-regulation of one’s own leaning
processes.
• Mayer defined metacognition as
knowledge and awareness of one’s own
cognitive processes.

Characteristics of Metacognition
• It is a higher order thinking which involves active control
over the cognitive processes engaged in learning.
• It involves awareness and self-regulation of one’s own
learning processes.
• It includes an awareness and understanding of how one
thinks and uses strategies during reading and writing.
• It involves knowing how to learn
• It is concerned with self-reflection, self-responsibility and
initiative as well as goal setting and time management.
• It involves active control over the cognitive process that
is used in learning situations

• It play a critical role in successful learning
• This is the process where the students takes
conscious control of the learning.
• It is a foundation upon which students become
independent readers and writers.
• Motivates learners
• Reduces mental fatigue, help for effective
memorization
• Monitor learner for own learning process

Components of Metacognition
• Metacognitive Knowledge (Metacognitive
Awarerness) - It is what individuals know about
themselves and others as cognitive processors.
• Metacognitive regulation – It is the regulation of
cognition and learning experiences through a set
of activities that help people control their learning.
• Metacognitive experience – These are those
experience that have something to do with the
current. On-going cognitive endeavor.
