Part 2:
Three Dimensions
Assemblage
Learning Objectives
Develop an understanding of assemblage.
Investigate artists who create work from found objects.
Learning Outcome
Present findings in sketchbook.
Create a quick response to Thomas Grunfeld.
Glossary
Assemblage: work made from unrelated and often fragmentary or discarded objects.
Taxidermy: the art of preparing and preserving animals and mounting them in lifelike
form.
Found Object: unaltered everyday objects used in sculpture
Art has been created from cast-off materials since art has been in existence.
Certain artists are drawn to making something out of what would generally be
considered nothing — taking what most people would view as useless and
arranging it in an artistic manner, or placing it with traditional materials or in a
particular setting that elevates it from junk to art.
Each of these artists creates art work by putting different objects together. Watch each of
the clips and circle the objects they use.
(It’s not just what you can see in the pictures- watch the clips)

Annette Messager combines taxidermy and/or stuffed toys. It is shocking to see
familiar objects presented in a disturbing way. Watch this.
Minnie Mouse twig?!
Thomas Grunfeld’s series ‘Misfits’ is a collection of hybrid taxidermy animals.
The creations are real but they appear to be the sort of creatures dreamt up
by children. Watch 50 seconds of this.
Rebecca Horn’s ‘The Feathered Prison Fan’ is made up of an exotic circle of ostrich
feathers, it creates a warm, seductive environment in which to nestle but these
reassuring sensations are snatched away when the fan snaps shut.
Watch 50 seconds of this
Michael Landy’s large-scale sculptures consist of fragments of
National Gallery paintings cast in three dimensions and assembled
with one of his artistic hallmarks – refuse. He has scoured car boot
sales and flea markets accumulating old machinery, cogs and
wheels to construct the works. Visitors can crank the works into life
with a foot pedal mechanism. Watch this
Xu Bing
Two years in the making, ‘The
Phoenix’ were constructed from
materials collected at various
Chinese construction sites
including demolition debris, steel
beams, tools, and assorted
remnants of migrant laborers. The
male Phoenix titled Feng measures
90 feet long, and the female,
Huang, is nearly 100 feet in length
from beak to its steel tail feathers.
Both birds are illuminated from
within through a network of lights.
Watch this
Do any of the artists use particular
objects to convey a bigger message?
Did you have a favourite artist?
Do you think using found objects is
an interesting way to create Art?

Create a response to Thomas Grunfeld
Use the images to create a simple response to
Grunfeld. Think carefully about how the head will join
to the body.
Metamorphosis part 2
Bring old toys (soft and made of plastic etc) to your next lesson.
Assemblage
Learning Objectives
Develop an understanding of constructing work from found objects.
Learn how to use equipment safely.
Learning Outcome
Create a sculpture from at least 3 toys.
Elastic bands
Glue gun
Masking tape and gum strip
Needle and thread
Scissors
Stapler
Soft sculpture Joining plastics and hard objects
String
Selotape
Wire
Safety pins
Pliers and wire cutters
Toy Hybrid Your hybrid must be made
from at least 3 toys.
Are the stitches, staples etc.
part of the overall final ‘look’?
Be careful when you are
breaking the toys apart.
Don’t put yourself or
others at risk.
Legs can be necks, heads
can be feet! Don’t be literal.
Think about how you join the
pieces together. Use the most
appropriate technique.
