Students are instructed to complete three drawing tasks: 1) draw an object from direct observation for their story, 2) draw a place from their imagination for their story, and 3) collect reference images for characters, costumes, and scenery to create a mood board with annotations showing ideas to bring to classwork. The drawing and collage work will be graded based on accuracy, use of techniques like tone and color, skill of mark-making, and clarity of ideas presented.

- 1. Homework Visual References have to be gathered to help you create your illustrations. Complete the following tasks: 1. One drawing from direct observation of an object in your story; 2. One drawing from visual memory and imagination of a place in your story; 3. Collect a range of images that you will need for reference for your illustrations for the characters, costumes and background scenery. Present these as a mood board across two pages in your sketchbook. Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3 Grade 4 Drawing is accurate- it is clear what the objects are. A range of images in the collage. Drawing is accurate and shows control of tone. Collage is arranged in a meaningful way to show ideas. Drawing demonstrates good use of tone and colour. Collage includes a range of images for each of the elements: characters, costumes, location etc. Drawing is skilled and not only shows excellent control of formal elements but also a breadth of markmaking. Collage is annotated showing clear ideas to be taken into class work.
