ACTIVITY 2: MR. HANNAH’S MIGRATION USING GOOGLE EARTH

QUESTION: Where did Mr. Hannah fly over a 10 day period from September 16, 2010
to September 26, 2010?

Students will:
1. Plot the location of Mr. Hannah as he migrates south given the latitude and longitude
of his position.
2. Measurethe distance flown each day.
3. Calculate the total distance flown over the ten day period and the average flown each
day.
4. Analyze the migration pathway.

MATERIALS: migration datatable ,calculator, computer, internet access, Google Earth

DIRECTIONS:
1. Input the location of Mr. Hannah on September 16, 2010. Click on the balloon icon to
mark the data point on the map. Record the city and state of the location on the data table.
2. Input the location of Mr. Hannah on September 17, 2010. Click on the balloon icon to
mark the data point on the map. Record the city and state of the location on the data table.
3. Using the ruler tool measure the distance flown over this one day period. Record the
distance on the data table.
4. Continue steps 1-3 for the additional data.
5. Add up all the distances flown daily to determine the total distance flown during the 10
day period. Record the total in the space indicated on the data table.
4. Divide the total distance flown by ten to determine the average distance flown daily.
Record the average in the space indicated on the data table.
5. Answer the analysis questions.

Analysis:
1. What was the longest distance flown in a day? What was the shortest distance flown in
a day?
2. List and determine how many different states Mr. Hannah flew through.
3. Which of the locations were on land?
4. Which of the locations were near or on a body of water? Determine the different types
of water Mr. Hannah visited. Describe how the fish would differ at each of these
locations.
5. Describe how Mr. Hannah flew in relation to the coastline. Why do you think Mr.
Hannah flew this route?
