ACTIVITY 1: MR. HANNAH’S MIGRATION

QUESTION: Where did Mr. Hannah fly over a 10 day period from September 16, 2010
to September 26, 2010?

Students will:
1. Plot the location of Mr. Hannah as he migrates south given the latitude and longitude
of his position.
2. Measure then calculatethe distance flown each day using a metric ruler and map
conversion scale.
3. Calculate the total distance flown over the ten day period and the average flown each
day.
4. Analyze the migration pathway.

MATERIALS: migration data table, metric ruler, map, and calculator

DIRECTIONS:
1. Using the migration data plot Mr. Hannahs location for the ten day period from
September 16, 2010 to September 26, 2010.
2. Measure the distance between each data point. Calculate and record the distance flown
each day using the map conversion scale.
3. Add up all the distances flown daily to determine the total distance flown during the 10
day period.
4. Divide the total distance flown by ten to determine the average distance flown daily.
5. Answer the analysis questions.

Analysis:
1. What was the longest distance flown in a day? What was the shortest distance flown in
a day?
2. List and determine how many different states Mr. Hannah flew through.
3. Describe how Mr. Hannah flew in relation to the coastline. Why do you think Mr.
Hannah flew this route?
