Introduction • Minimalist architecture, sometimes referred to as ‘minimalism', involves the use of simple design elements, without ornamentation or decoration. • Minimalist architecture is about achieving a better design through simplicity – a simplicity of form, space, material, detail, and color. • Condensing the form of a design to its bare essentials, reveals the true “essence of architecture” spaces to get to a place of clarity. - 3. Minimalist architectural style Characteristics include: 1) Simplicity in form and function. • Simple house design. • Straightforward efficient plan and elevation.
- 5. 3) Uncomplicated cladding & wall finishes. • Using a simple continuous exterior cladding material can easily provide visual appeal by expressing the physical characteristics of the materials and their texture. 4) Repetition to give a sense of order and unification.

What is Minimalism in Architecture: • In minimalist architecture, design elements strive to convey the message of simplicity. • The basic geometric forms, elements without decorations, simple materials and the repetitions of structures represent a sense of order and essential quality. • The movement of natural light in buildings reveals simple and clean spaces. • The idea of minimalism can be described as “less is more”. - 14. Barcelona Pavilion • Architects: Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich. • Pavilion - Spain • Year: 1929 This building was used for the official opening of the German section of the exhibition. Lama Jassim 3010
- 15. • It is an important building in the history of modern architecture, known for its simple form and its spectacular use of excessive materials, such as marble and travertine. • The same features of minimalism can be applied to the prestigious furniture specifically designed for the building, including the iconic Barcelona chair .

Concept • The concept while designing this building was “Less is more”. • The concept was ”An ideal zone of tranquility" for the visitors that wanted to experience a visual attraction. • The pavilion had to display no exhibits except a single sculpture, the building was an exhibit itself, because of its unique aesthetic quality, the building was pronounced an exhibit for visitors to see.
- 17. • Free plan, the layout of the building consists of a single-story, horizontal volume, with several interconnected areas. There are no closed rooms, but the layout of walls and glass panels which guides the visitors. • Visitors were intentionally led in a puzzle-like corridor instead of a straight line, the spaces in-between are spaced out, wide or narrow.

- 22. Diamanten Cabin • The Diamanten cabin is called the “Diamond” in Norwegian. • It was built in 2019 by the A38 Arkitekter architect, in Norway. • This design challenges traditional ideas of how architecture in the mountains should be. • Its an exercise in the juxta-positioning of modern minimalist form with the ancient Norwegian wooden buildings.
- 23. The concept The concept is based on minimal interference with nature, which requires a very sturdy central column structurally supporting the annex. This allows the existing terrain to remain almost untouched.
- 24. The interior: • The space inside is very simple and speaks for itself. • It has large windows in the wall and roof that provide fantastic views of the valley bellow and the sky above.
