- 2. Introduction An operating system (OS) is an interface between hardware and user. It manages hardware and software resources of the system. An operating system which controls mobile devices is called Mobile Operating System. They are simple and deal with the wireless versions of broadband and local connectivity. A mobile operating system, that operates a smartphone, tablet, PDA, or other mobile device.
- 3. Different types of mobile OS There are many mobile operating systems. The followings demonstrate the most important ones: Symbian Android iOS (iPhone OS ) Windows Phone RIM BlackBerry
- 4. Symbian Symbian OS is a mobile operating system, developed by Symbian Ltd, in June 1998. It runs exclusively on ARM processors. Symbian OS is 32 bit. The native language of the Symbian OS is C++. It is a multitasking operating system and very less dependence on peripherals. It supports audio, video recording, playback and streaming, and Image conversion. In June 2008, Nokia announced the acquisition of Symbian Ltd.
- 5. Android It is a platform and an operating system for mobile devices based on the Linux Kernel. Developed by Google and later the Open Handset Alliance. Android is designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. Most of Android is free and open source, but a large amount of software on Android devices (such as Play Store, Google Search, Google Play Services, Google Music, and so on) are proprietary and licensed. Built with JAVA Programming Language. Android uses Linux for its device drivers, memory management, process management, and networking It supports a wide variety of connectivity such as GSM, Wi- Fi, 3G, …
- 6. iOS (iPhone OS) iOS (previously iPhone OS) is a mobile operating system developed and distributed by Apple Inc. It is based on Mach Kernel. Mac OS X has a preemptive multitasking environment. Preempting is the act of taking the control of operating system from one task and giving it to another task. It supports real-time behavior. Originally released in 2007 for the iPhone and iPod Touch. In June 2010, Apple rebranded iPhone OS as "iOS". It has second largest installed base worldwide on smartphones behind Android.
- 7. Windows Phone Windows Phone (abbreviated as WP) is a series of proprietary mobile operating systems developed by Microsoft. Designed for mobile devices and based onMicrosoft Win32. It is run on Pocket PCs , Smartphone’s and Portable media centers. It provides ultimate interoperability . Users with various requirements are able to manipulate their data. It is closed source and proprietary. It has third largest installed base on smartphones behind Android and iOS.
- 8. RIM BlackBerry BlackBerry OS is the proprietary operating system made by Research in Motion (RIM) for their BlackBerry line of handhelds. It provides multitasking. The operating system is designed for use of input devices such as the track wheel, track ball and track pad. Programmed in C++. It provides good security for data. It is a QNX based operating system. It operates on microkernel type of kernel. Application Store can run on other phone OS’s (Symbian, Windows Phone, Android).
