Module 4 Topic 1 The Coordinate Plane (Part 1) Midpoint Formula Relations & Functions
Vocabulary x-axis y-axis Origin Quadrants I, II, III, IV Ordered Pair Rene’ Descartes 1596-1650 “ I think; therefore I am.”
The x-axis is the Horizontal Axis. The y-axis is the Vertical Axis.
The Origin is the Center of the Coordinate Plane . Its Ordered Pair is (0, 0).
Notice how a Coordinate Plane is made up of 4 squares? These sections of squares are called Quadrants . They are numbered: I, II, III, IV
Quadrant I (+,+) Quadrant II (-,+) Quadrant III (-,-) Quadrant IV (+,+) Question: What Quadrant does (-5, 3) lie? Answer: Quadrant II
Graphing Ordered Pairs What are the coordinates of Point B? What are the coordinates of Point A? (-5, -7) (7, -2)
Click on the below link to practice these concepts. The Coordinate Plane Game
Now that you have the concept of The Coordinate Plane Go to the next Power Point presentation to begin instructional notes on The Midpoint Formula
