More Practice Reading the Prompt 1. What is the State asking you to do? (Green) 2. How is the State asking you to do it? (Pink) Organizing your Response 1. Using the green highlighter, draw a center circle and insert your viewpoint. 2. You will need four “pink circles” of support.
The Prompt Your mayor is considering a teen curfew of 9:00 P.M. on weeknights because of a problem with vandalism. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper in which you convince readers to accept your point of view on the proposed curfew. Your point of view goes in the center (Green circle) Look again at the format (letter, editor of local paper).
Do it Again! Look at the next two prompts.
Two more persuasive prompts: Your school has received a large donation for the purpose of inviting a famous person to speak or perform for the students and staff at an assembly. Select a famous person you would like to have visit your school for this assembly. Write to the members of your student government, persuading them that this is the person who should be invited. State legislators believe that students’ driving privileges should be directly linked to their performance and attendance in school. For example, students would be required to maintain a certain grade point average and attendance record in order to drive. Or, if students fail a class, they would not be allowed to drive until their grade was improved. State and defend your position on this issue to an audience of state legislators. Be sure to include specific reasons to support your position. Use the graphic organizer to map out your points!
