More than a map
- 1. More Than a Map Online projects using GoogleMaps. Benefits of doing projects in Google Maps are that you can see the student’s progress as they go, see what each individual contributed to group projects, and you can mark it anywhere you can access the internet. No lugging around paper. Things you need to get done before the students can do anything related to the project: 1. You, the teacher, need a Google account. 2. The students need to get Google accounts. 3. You need some way of getting contact information from the students. a. Google username b. Google emails (need this to invite them to the “master” Google map.) 4. I made a questionnaire using Google forms to get the info. I needed. Once you have invited them to the map, you can teach them how to insert pictures and embed videos to their pins on the map. Once the pictures and videos are done, the students can start to research the specific topic they are doing and write about it under the picture or video.
- 2. HOW TO: 1. Insert a picture: a. Use search.creativecommons.org to search for pictures. b. Type in what you are looking for and click Flickr from below. c. Right click on the photo that you want. i. Choose “Medium 500”(it’s a standard size that should work for all photos) ii. Right click on “Download the Medium 500 size of this photo” iii. Copy link location. d. Go back to your pin on the map. e. Make sure you are in “Rich Text” f. Click on the insert image icon and paste the URL, and your image should appear. g. Under the picture type “Photo Source” and paste the photo URL.
- 3. HOW TO: 2. Embed a video: a. Choose HTML in your pin. b. Search YouTube for a relevant video. c. Click “Share” under the video. d. Click Embed. e. Copy the highlighted link. f. Paste into your pin making sure you are in HTML. g. Click ok on the bottom of your pin. h. Click save, done, then check to see if the video worked.
