- 13. 13 BorgWarner • Global automotive supplier with 74 locations in 19 countries • Over 30,000 employees • $8 Billion in sales annually • Two global instances of SAP – About a 50/50 split on the two systems – Divided by business groups. • One of the SAP ECC (enterprise resource planning) 6.0 systems migrated to Business suite on HANA on May 15th 2015 – We call this the Enterprise system
- 14. 14 Investigation • Enterprise needed to upgrade from ECC 6.0 EHP0 (enhancement pack) to at least EHP6 to support the upcoming revenue recognition module from SAP. This was a business requirement driven by Finance. • We were at the end of a Hardware cycle and would have been refreshing hardware in 6 to 8 months • We knew we wouldn’t have another opportunity to buy hardware for 5 years. • We decided to investigate SAP HANA versus our traditional Oracle database.
- 15. 15 Factors in our decision • Our Oracle database was 1.6 TB and growing at 50 GB a month. • Our VM and storage infrastructure were also due to be refreshed but that project was going to be another 6 to 8 months past the date we needed to start the upgrade and migration. • SAP HANA Tailored Data Center Integration (build-your-own) was still pretty new and it didn’t fit into our timeline. • Costs of traditional system with fast disk was the same as going with SAP HANA in our case. • Talked to other customers and did the researched ourselves - the EHP upgrade was by far the bigger part of the project and more risky than moving to HANA from Oracle.
- 16. 16 Why Dell EMC? • Dell EMC was our preferred server vendor. • Dell EMC’s proposal was more price attractive than any other option we investigated • Dell EMC’s SAP HANA experts helped us design the architecture and worked with us on many iterations to meet our needs. Dell EMC was the most flexible in setup and support • Dell EMC’s timeframe for installation was also much quicker than the other vendors we investigated.
- 17. 17 Our SAP HANA environment on Dell EMC • We are using Dell PowerEdge R920s with 2TB of Memory. • We use RedHat for our Linux environment • We have sandbox, development, 2 QA systems and production in this landscape. • Production has a high availability cluster for SAP HANA and we also replicate to a DR server in another data center. • We use a mix of VMs and physical servers for the SAP Central Instance. • We backup the database to local solid state drives in the Dell PowerEdge R920s, then move them to EMC Data Domain.
- 18. 18 Benefits with SAP HANA on Dell EMC • Database size reduced from 1.8 TB to under 330GB initially. We have grown to about 400GB for the database. • SAP HANA is much easier to administer than Oracle • Backup times reduced from 4.5 hours to about 25 minutes. • Average database time was cut in half. • Average write times were reduced by 2/3. • Overall system performance was 25% better after migrating to SAP HANA. • One transaction that runs 30,000 times a month is 6 seconds faster each time it runs. That is about 50 hours a month in productivity back.
