MUSIC VIDEO
PRODUCTION
PROCESS
LOGGEORGINA WHITELEY
FILMING
• Technical – For filming I used a high quality phone camera and had no problem
with batteries. However, some footage was shaky so a tripod / stabilizer should
have been used.
• Logistical – The weather wasn’t ideal for filming as it was overcast and not as
sunny as I would have liked for the field scenes. However, there were no access
issues and the setting was perfectly fine for the college scenes.
• Personnel – We had to retake a few shots as the cast would laugh, but it
worked out in the end. The cameraman for the field scenes took some shaky shots,
but overall did what I wanted him to do.
• Planning – My planning helped as I knew exactly where and what to film. It also
helped me order to clips when editing them, which made the editing process a lot
more efficient.
• Next steps – Ideally, I would re-film the field shots and get some more
college shots so I could do the second verse like planned, however even
though it strayed away slightly from the original plan, the music video still
turned out mostly how I wanted it to.
FILMING –
PRODUCTION STILLS
These two stills show the contrast in setting and atmosphere of the two
locations, paralleling each other.
EDITING –
FILE MANAGEMENT
Screenshot and annotate where you have saved your work
and how you have organised your footage so you know
where it is – this will also include your audio track for your
video and any other images, found footage, etc
I created a new folder and stored all footage and audio in it, keeping all
my media files together in a single place. This meant it was organised
and I didn’t have to spend ages while I went through all my files looking
for the specific videos I needed.
EDITING –
SETTING UP PREMIERE
I saved my project in a folder named
‘College’ as ‘mv
project college’ so I’d know exactly what it
was and where to find it.
The video settings were1080p with a
frame rate that though shows an accurate
preview of how it will look when rendered,
it reduces lag caused by quick transitions.
EDITING –
IMPORTING FOOTAGE
I imported my footage by having all clips and audio in one folder in order to
access it easily. Similar clips are next to each other so for the college scenes I
only had to look in one place and for the filed scenes, I also only had to look
in one place. I imported the audio first, and then the clips in the same order
they were installed. They were put in the media tab which I could access
really easily, then just drag onto the timeline.
EDITING –
WORKSPACE
I set up all my clips uncut in order of how I wanted them in the
timeline, separating visuals and audio. The preview window is at
the top right of the layout, with tabs for Media, Video Effects and
transitions. They can be organised by switching tabs quickly,
meaning it’s easy to access quickly.
EDITING –
ASSEMBLY EDIT
I put my clips in the order I wanted to, matching the
length of intro, chorus, verse and then chorus. I then
muted all the sound from the videos so you can just
hear the song. I used the timeline preview of audio
sounds to match up corresponding clips.
EDITING –
REFINEMENT
Show and explain how you have refined and improved your
initial sequence edit
I improved the
timeline by
adding animated
custom
transitions using
BlurMoCurves
and shifting on
the x axis after 4
milliseconds
using key-
frames. I
changed it to
0.36 to make the
smoothest
transition.
EDITING –
COLOUR CORRECTION/SFX
For each clip I had to adjust the
threshold and ray intensity to make
sure the effects weren’t too much and it
matched with the lighting.
For brightness and contrast, channel blend
and colour balance, I used saved them al with
presets called ‘mv’ to make sure the same
effect was used for all clips and I’d know where
to find it..
EDITING –
EXPORT
I exported my
completed college by
exporting it to the
same location all
footage and audio was
stored. I saved it there
before uploading it to
YouTube. It was called
‘MV Project 3. it was 3
because I did test
renders beforehand to
make sure the effects
worked and it was high
quality before
rendering the whole
thing to save time.
I rendered using these
settings in HD with a
frame rate that works
best with the custom
key-frame transitions. I
made sure it was
suitable for being
uploaded on YouTube
and used the base
preset recommended.
