PRODUCTION
PROCESS
LOGGEORGE WETTON
PRODUCTION LOG:
GUIDANCE
• This document is for you to track the progress of your
production – filming, editing and post-production.
• This is so you can track what you did and how you did it,
explaining and amendments and changes you made and
tracking the decisions that have shaped the practical
creation of your music video.
• The more detail you include about how you made your music
video, the better. The document is broken down in to two
sections, Filming and Editing, each of these is then made of
specific elements that occur in both.
• For each slide there is a prompt detailing what you should
include, delete the prompt after you have complete the slide.
• Remember, images often show what you’ve done more
effectively than words. Use text to explain an illustration.
FILMING
Explain what worked and didn’t work about your filming and how you
managed this covering the following areas:
• Technical – using the cameras and any technical equipment; this could
be how you did your lip sync, used the green screen, dealt with problems
with batteries, etc
• Logistical – did your locations work? Did you have any access
problems? Did it rain?
• Personnel – how were your cast/crew? Did anyone let you down? How
did you manage this?
• Planning – did your planning help? Do you think it could have worked
better? How?
• Next steps – do you need to re-film? Film more? Have you changed your
video? How/why?
*If you make any drastic changes to your video you MUST
add this to your planning documentation and state how and
why this has happened
FILMING
Technical:
Green screen: I got the green screen from the booking equipment on blackboard. It arrived on the day that I needed it for filming.
I used in the room that I booked and used in the same way that Peter Gabriel did for the original sledgehammer video. The
method I did for this was lying over the green screen screen while filming. In which we would have to flatten it out so that not
creases affect the image while editing.
Camera: Any camera work that we did while filming we had a few technical problems like changing the FPS as we didn’t know
how to do it at the time. We also had a problem with the tripod as we found it hard to attach the camera to it, with it having to be
screwed into to the bottom of the camera.
Logistical:
Most of what I filmed was filmed indoors with me not having to got any specific location to film my video. I still had to book out a
room for what I was doing with me using the booking website on blackboard.
Personnel:
We were going to be filming a day early than what we originally hoped but the cameraman didn’t turn up. So we had to postpone
the filing to another day because we didn’t know how to work the camera, despite the fact that we already had the equipment and
the room.
Planning:
Planning was definitely a beneficial factor with me doing the storyboards and shot list as it gave me a vague idea of what I wanted
for each shot. It was doing theses shots what made me think about how they were going to look. Coming up with a schedule for
my editing and filing also helped me plan out what I was going to do despite the fact that plans change.
Next steps:
There were some shots that weren't realistic enough so it ended up not being realistic enough to in the editing process. One of
theses shot was going to be a miniature Christmas tree coming out of my mouth for one shot. This would have been done by
there being a shot where I open mouth. Then with the editing it would have come out of my mouth, but the more we thought about
it, the more difficult it was to edit. There was also a lot of shots that I filmed that weren't originally in my storyboards or shot list like
the shot with the lights going on and off, and the shot with the light machine projecting onto my face.
FILMING –
PRODUCTION STILLS
We had a shot where the light machine
was going to be projecting onto my face.
But we cut as we thought it didn’t look right
and we couldn’t really edit with it.
There has been clips as short as
a few seconds that I have had to
cut because you can see in it
that I'm smiling.
EDITING
• Record your edit progress, decisions,
problems, etc. in this section
• Include screenshots with annotations,
statements, etc.
• Try to explain how you worked and justify
why you chose to work the way you did.
EDITING –
SETTING UP PREMIERE
The first I did was open up Adobe
Premiere Pro and open up a new
project file. I named this project the
little drummer boy remix and put in
my Adobe premiere Pro documents
location. I then clicked ok and I was
on the software. I set my video
settings that were on my timeline to
DSC_0118p. My timeline was open
ready for my clips to be imported
and weren’t on any other section
such as the effects or the markers.
EDITING –
IMPORTING FOOTAGE
The next thing I did was import all the clips
onto Adobe Premiere Pro with the clips that
I had filmed and uploaded into my
documents on my computer. I did this by
going on file and under it is import, where it
will take me to my documents. I highlighted
all the clips using the mouse and pressed
import, to where all the clips imported onto
the software. Once these clips were
imported they were in my timeline selection
and I could just drag them across to my
editing selection to begin editing them.
EDITING –
FILE MANAGEMENT
With all my clips imported onto the
software, I then saved my work so that
all my document was save. I went onto
file that was on the top left and went into
save as. I saved this file into my desktop
so I could easily find it whenever I turned
my computer on and pressed save to
where it saved into my desktop. All my
clips that were on my timeline I put in
order from I wanted from the look of the
thumbnail in the video. This made it
much easier when putting my clips into
my editing section. I also at this point
imported the clips that I was going to
have in the background of the screen
that will be used for the green screen
shots.
Where I saved my work
Volume control
EDITING –
ASSEMBLY EDIT
All the clips that I had on my timeline were
already in order. So all I had to do was put
the clips that were in the timeline into the
editing sequence. These clips that I had
imported needed cutting in some area as
there were stages in the clips where I was
in character. For instance I'm talking about
lighting in one of them, so I had to cut that
clip. I could see the clip through the
program monitor that was in the middle of
the screen. I edited each clip separately
and once they were edited. I put them in a
single row going across. Once all these
clips were in my timeline I muted the whole
line so you wouldn’t get any talking that
was raw in the clip.
EDITING –
REFINEMENT
For the first few clips that were in the
editing section, I edited them by changing
the speed. The first thing I did was right
click the clip and selected the speed. I
then turned the percentage of the clip
down. When it came to the clips that I
edited in the end did the same thing. By
right clicking the clip, selecting speed and
then this time clicked the reverse speed
box, meaning that the clip is now going
back in time. Also at the beginning of the
video I needed the title in the music
video. I did this by selecting the type tool,
that’s the T that’s on the left side of the
editing selection, and then placed the box
in the program monitor and stretched it to
how long I wanted it for.
EDITING –
COLOUR CORRECTION/SFX
Whenever I needed to change the colour of the video I was
editing. I dragged the marker across so that it was hovering
over the video. Then I clicked onto colour which was the four
selection on the editing on the top. When it came to the shots
where the lights going out and the lighting keeps changing a
different colour. That it when I used this tool the most. I did this
by using the razor tool that was on the left side of the editing
selection and cut the clip into several parts. Cutting it
whenever I came onto the screen and changed the colour of
the whole clip. However there were some colours that were
quite bright and had to use the razor tool before it cut into the
darkness because it was still noticeable and didn’t blend in. I
did all these different colour variations with just the shadow tint
alone and changed the adjustments if I thought the colour
didn’t blend in well with the clip.
EDITING –
GREEN SCREEN
When it came to editing the background of the clips that
featured the green screen. I started by editing this by clicking
on the clip that I wanted to edit. I clicked effects controls and
when into keying. By clicking on this, I went under it and
clicked onto ultra key, dragging it down to the editing section,
putting it under the clip that I wanted edited. This made the
background black. The reason this done is so that
background look smoother and any crease that were
originally on the green screen cant be caught on the footage
now. I then placed the clips that I had imported in the timeline
into my editing section. I edited these clips by duplicating the
video. This was done by right clicking the clip and copying.
The next thing I did was go to the top left section that said
edit and pasted it into my editing selection. I next went into
editing, effect controls and concentrated on motion. This
involves changing the position and scale of the image.
Through measurements that can be selected by changing it
to how you want through the mouse. If there was something
that was in the duplicated image that overlapped the image.
Then I would need to crop it. This can be done by going onto
your timeline selecting video effects, scrolling down to
transform and then clicking crop. This should show up on the
editing tab on the top left and you will be able to crop it from
all angles through the measurements that are similar to the
motion controls.
EDITING –
EXPORT
Once I had finished editing, I began to
export my video. I went onto file, went
into export and dragged across to
media. I gave an output name of “the
little drummer boy finished version” and
selected “maximum render quality”. So
it would take longer to render but the
quality would be really good. The next
thing I did was save into my desktop
and rendered the video waiting for it to
upload. Once I had finished rendering I
was able to access it from my
documents, which I did. Uploading it
onto YouTube. So that I can put it on my
blogger account.
