MUSIC VIDEO
PRODUCTION
PROCESS
LOGYOUR NAME
PRODUCTION LOG:
GUIDANCE
• This document is for you to track the progress of your
production – filming, editing and post-production.
• This is so you can track what you did and how you did it,
explaining and amendments and changes you made and
tracking the decisions that have shaped the practical
creation of your music video.
• The more detail you include about how you made your music
video, the better. The document is broken down in to two
sections, Filming and Editing, each of these is then made of
specific elements that occur in both.
• For each slide there is a prompt detailing what you should
include, delete the prompt after you have complete the slide.
• Remember, images often show what you’ve done more
effectively than words. Use text to explain an illustration.
FILMING
(Ive done the filming half of the log at college
and can not access at home and due to the
other work we have been doing I haven't had
time to merge the two togother.)
Explain what worked and didn’t work about your filming and how you managed this
covering the following areas:
• Technical – using the cameras and any technical equipment; this could be
how you did your lip sync, used the green screen, dealt with problems with
batteries, etc
• Logistical – did your locations work? Did you have any access problems? Did
it rain?
• Personnel – how were your cast/crew? Did anyone let you down? How did
you manage this?
• Planning – did your planning help? Do you think it could have worked better?
How?
• Next steps – do you need to re-film? Film more? Have you changed your
video? How/why?
TECHNICAL
LOGISTICAL
PERSONNEL
PLANNING
EDITING
• Record your edit progress, decisions, problems, etc. in
this section
• Include screenshots with annotations, statements, etc
where possible
• Try to explain how you worked and justify why you chose
to work the way you did.
• Follow the structure and what to include on each slide as
this is necessary for evidence for assessment
• Pick notable moments in the editing process and discuss
them, what worked/didn’t work and why, how you adjusted
to problems. Discuss how you worked and what you
learned from the process
WHAT WENT WELL
[3 EXAMPLES]
• Something that went really well is that I really feel I captured
the look and aesthetic I was aiming for, this aesthetic is the
old retro 90s look with simple edits due to lack of software
they had and also with the vhs camera effects I used by
buying an app on my phone which makes your phone camera
into a vhs camera.
• Another thing that turned out really well was my choice of
song as it really added to the feel of the video and the mood
and tone it sets off. The beat of the song also really helped
with the editing as I was able to cut and transition to the beat
which really added to the gritty rap feel I was going for.
• Another thing that went well where the clips I got were really
effective and suited the aesthetic of the video and really went
well with the video. I performed in most of the clips and really
tired to take inspiration from other videos in the way that the
performer performed in there videos which I feel shows
throughout.
WHAT PROBLEMS DID
YOU HAVE? [3
EXAMPLES]
• I ran into a lot of problems but one of the main ones was the fact I
have a faulty computer which crashes a lot and with the fact I had to
edit from home and buy the software as I had missed time due to a
health issue so I had to edit the whole video from home and while
editing if my computer crashed I lost a lot of work, this happened a
few times which really made it take a while to complete the video
itself.
• Another big problem I faced was with lockdown and the time I was
unable to work I was unable to get enough clips which meant I really
had to adapt and figure out how I could use the clips I had and make
a video the best standard I could, I found this very hard but in the
end I feel like I did the best with what I had
• Another problem I faced was that at the last minute I realised that
quite a few of my clips were portrait and that some where going to
be very hard to use so this was something else I had to overcome
and adapt to but luckily I found a way to include some of the clips by
doing a more zoomed in shot and some of the other clips I used to
fill in emtpty spaces and I edited them in a way so they didn’t look
out of place.
NEXT STEPS…
What are the main things you’ve learned from this project? Pick a minimum of 5 to
discuss…
• Editing techniques- from working at college but mostly at home I learned many
editing techniques and ways of editing to really suit the song type or video type.
Cutting was the most important technique in my video as it needed to be on beat
and precise with the music to really give it a strong impact on the viewer and to
really set the tone of the video itself.
• That it takes so much time and effort that is put into filming and editing to create
something good and impactful and that suits a certain genre or song, it really
showed me that you have to have patience and that it’s a process that cant be
rushed as every detail is on show and can be seen.
• That planning ahead and having a good idea of what it is you need or what it is your
doing is crucial as it saves so much time especially when it comes to filming as it
means you can go to your location and get what you need filming and then move
onto the next location. As if you went in clueless you would have to decide where
you need to shoot what shot types you need and all this takes up too much time.
• Having a set idea loom and aesthetic is so important because then you can really
take inspiration from videos similar to what you are trying to achieve and means
you can really make your videos not only suit but stand out in that genre of music
or in that style of video.
• Time management is key although it was hard to manage our time due to covid it
shows me that in future it will be so important to manage time wisely and know
what days to go film know which days to do powerpoint work and know when to
edit as it makes thing so much easier to do but not only that it saves so much time
and you know exactly when and where you need to get everything done.
