Macro Web Media was founded in
1999 as a consultancy and software
development company.
In late 2006, with a background of
over 6 years in developing software
and web applications, as well as
configuring servers and operating
systems (constantly updated with the
latest quality assurance procedures
for information security) a whole team
started working on the development
of Virtualization processes. The result is
one of the first specialised organisations

no time, the closure of a partnership
agreement with the Californian
company VMware allowed the delivery

Virtualization is a key technology that is
part of cloud computing; Mike Adams,
the product marketing Director of
VMware stated: “Virtualization lets you
run multiple operating systems and
multiple applications on the same server
at the same time. It allows businesses
to achieve a reduction in IT costs while

The main benefits of virtualization for

The IT industry very much still fears the
cloud. Since they manage virtualization
within an enterprise, IT managers think they
can maintain full control of every situation
and therefore that they are indispensable.
By outsourcing the process, they mistakenly

In general, the PRIVATE CLOUD
is an IT infrastructure (meaning
a network of computers which
provide services) mainly dedicated
to the needs of a single organisation,
located on its premises or
entrusted to the management
of a third party (server hosting)
controlled by the owner of the data.
The private cloud can be compared to
the traditional “data centre” in which,
however, technological solutions that
optimise the use of available resources
and can easily be strengthened in
case of need are used (from “Cloud
Computing, the protection of data so
as not to be caught unawares”).
MWM CED PRIVATE CLOUD chose to
create its own PRIVATE CLOUD with
the service model called IaaS, CLOUD

other words, with the infrastructure

The Working Group on Article 29 on data protection in Opinion 05/2012 on
cloud computing stated:
“USING PRIVATE CLOUD
CAN BE VIABLE AND EVEN
RECOMMENDED FROM A
DATA PROTECTION POINT OF VIEW...”
The Working Group is an independent European advisory body for the protection of personal data
and privacy. In its opinion, the Group confirms that data protection is not limited to security and
therefore data availability, integrity and confidentiality, but involves principles of transparency,
isolation,thepossibilityofinterveningandportability(Article8oftheCharterofFundamentalRights).
Risks
Examples of risks:
1. Lack of availability due to the lack
of interoperability: for example, if a cloud
provider offers a unique technology for its
clients it may be difficult to transfer data
and documents between different cloud
systems (data portability) or exchange
information with entities that use cloud
services managed by different suppliers
(interoperability).
2. Lack of data confidentiality and
disclosure to the authorities: the personal
data processed in the cloud may be
subject to requests for information for
the purpose of combating crime by the
competent authorities of EU Member
States and third countries. There is a
risk that personal information may be
disclosed to foreign agencies which are
not subject to European legislation.
3. Lack of isolation: a cloud provider
could use the physical control of data
of different clients to facilitate their
connection. In this way, administrators
can connect information from different
clients.
4. Reduced possibility of
intervention: complexity and dynamics
of the outsourcing chain often limit the
opportunity of intervening (outsourcing).
5. Data control and privacy
management: a cloud provider may not
provide measures and tools to assist
the controller in data management, for
example in terms of access, correction or
deletion of data.

Article 6(1) of Directive 95/46/EC on the deletion of the data
states that: “the secure deletion of data requires storage
media to be destroyed or demagnetised, or that are effectively

Obviously, the speed of Ghz changes greatly depending on the
type of processor mounted on the motherboard. The so-called

The task of the CPU is to carry out the instructions of a program
in the main or primary memory (RAM), after removal from the

The latency of a computer system can be defined as the time interval that
elapses between the moment in which the input to the system arrives and
the time at which its output is provided (it therefore measures a system’s
response speed). The Macro Web Media CED ZERO LATENCY project has

The zero latency, or negative latency, theory is a concept that involved our research and
development department for several years. The main delays encountered have always been
caused by the disc writing and reading latency.
Although the latest version of VMware allows the use of the cache for reading files between
a server and SAN, the MWM CED PRIVATE CLOUD team of systems technicians chose to go
beyond using a cache on SSD discs that acts as a buffer. In our benchmark we obtained
latency times next to zero in the writing phase. We are proud to have achieved this goal and
to be able to offer our clients, once again first, the best and most powerful cloud technology.
We have made the virtual servers of our clusters 10 times faster on average.

use a service equal to that of MWM CED PRIVATE CLOUD. This
fee ranges from $ 1,000/month (to guarantee a response time
of less than one hour) up to even $ 15,000/month to guarantee

The loss of data due to a hardware fault, more
precisely on the disc, is very remote. In our
infrastructure, the decision was to have a level 10
RAID which ensures the achievement of extreme
performance in any conditions.
Not having a backup, or not being sure that the
copy is working, is a mistake that can be costly.
On their own machines, our clients can perform
planned and scheduled backups when they
want and with any software.
MWM CED PRIVATE CLOUD guarantees its clients
additional security. The entire virtual server is
duplicated every night and a check ensures
consistency and subsequent maintenance in
backup for five days. In the event of a disaster,
clients can ask their MWM CED technicians to
activate a parallel server on which the backup
can be restored. Clients can then choose whether
to send it directly to production or retrieve any
files that have been lost.

Licenses are granted under the
SPLA contract and they may be
terminated by the closing down
of the servers on which they are
installed.

HOW FAR IS SPLA ECONOMIC
COMPAREDTOATRADITIONAL
LICENSE?
A Standard Edition Windows Server 2012 license in
SPLA costs € 19 per month on average. However, the
traditional license requires a one-off payment of € 800.
This is roughly equal to 3½ contractual years: the license
SPLA is more economic. It should also not be forgotten
that the SPLA license includes all upgrades (for example,
switching from the 2012 version to the 2016 version) and
the taxation is also different: the traditional licensing
must be managed via depreciation, while the invoice of
an SPLA license, like everything that concerns the cloud,
is entirely deductible because it is a service.
