My Relationship With Technology

- 2. The Pencil My experience with the no. 2 pencil has lead me to value the new tools that were given to us throughout the years. In grammar school the pencil was my only option when handing in worksheets and tests. While the constant struggle of sharpening my pencil to fill in the numerous circles for my state tests slowly became frustrating, so did my patience. I found myself losing my train of thought when writing in ink or led and when the computer was introduced to me I began to really express myself in my writings.
- 3. The Computer As I entered fifth grade our literacy classes became computer classes and I remember learning the basics of the computer and the significance of QWERTY. While being able to get sensation back in my hands since typing wasn’t as painful as it was to write, our research was still being done in the library using library catalogs. Typing was like riding a bike for me. It was so easy and I couldn’t wait to see what I could do with it!
- 4. The Internet When I began the 6th grade looking up research had become a revolution for me. Although we weren’t allowed to use Google at the time because it was blocked, we used Yahooligans for information, research papers, and games. The amount of time to find information was cut in half. You could type in exactly what you were looking for and BAM there it was!
- 5. AOL Lingo High school was a whole new experience. Instead of calling my friends, I began instant messaging them on AOL. Instead of writing letters or thank you cards, I emailed and sent E-cards. Times began to change and I loved how technology was able to keep up with our fast pace society we lived in. It was at this time computer lingo had taken over my writing and I was constantly using are as “r” and you as “u.” It was almost as if I was slowly becoming illiterate.
- 6. Power Point As high school came to an end and I entered college the computer was able to do roughly everything. I could write my papers, look up information, play games, socialize, and video chat with people in other countries. My teachers were requiring everything to be printed instead of hand written. Power point allowed me to design different presentations to be neater and more organized. I could give a full presentation in front of the whole class and every individual could see it clearly.
- 7. Future Technologies While technology will always be advancing I feel that I have the structures to help me improve with the changes. As of now I have the minimum knowledge of a lot of new technologies such as: twitter, g-mail, reader, electronic catalogs, and even Microsoft windows itself. Learning more about each of these new technologies could help me with the changes of literacy and the way I come across information.
