Negative numbers can be added or subtracted in simple ways. When adding a positive and negative number, the result is negative. When adding two negative numbers, the result remains negative. When subtracting a positive from a negative, the result is negative. When subtracting a negative from a negative, the operation turns into addition where the negatives are made positive.
