The nervous system is divided into the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS includes the brain and spinal cord while the PNS includes nerves outside the CNS. The nervous system functions through sensory input, integration, and motor output. Neurons are the basic functional units and come in sensory, motor, and interneuron types. Neurons communicate via electrical signals called action potentials that propagate through neuron extensions called axons and dendrites.
